Geekery: Cowboy Bebop’s Director Does Blade Runner

A new anime short directed by Shinichiro Watanabe fills in the Blade Runner time line – beautifully.

Shinichirō Watanabe is a legend among anime directors. His work on Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop helped turn them into classics of the genre. He’s turned his attention to one of his influences: Blade Runner.

2022: Blackout takes us to events 3 years after we first meet Rick Deckard. A giant EMP wave hits the globe, taking out cities and raising anti-replicant sentiment. After watching this I really want to see a series set in the universe from Watanabe.

You can check out a low-res version here. If you want high-res you’re going to have to subscribe to Crunchyroll.

This is the third and final prequel movie that explains the story between the original movie and the sequel. If you missed the first two…

Blade Runner 2049 hits theaters October 6th – tickets are on sale now.

    It’s on crunchyroll right now.

Overall it’s not bad if you’re a fan of these anime movie tie ins like The Animatrix.

Sadly since it’s only a short thing there’s not much time to really build the plot or characters before we get around to the kung fu and explosions. But they did do pretty well with what space t hey had, and it will likely fill in some holes between the two movies.

Which is exactly what it’s there for.

No spoilers: The short is well worth watching.
