GW: Rumor Engine “Don’t Fear The Reaper”

Games Workshop has a new Rumor Engine Teaser and it’s going to take a sharp wit to crack this clue.

via Warhammer Community

“It’s rumour engine time, and this one is particularly puzzling…”

My first thought for this bit takes me right to the Skaven miniatures. Something about the curve of this weapon just reminds me of rat-tails.

There is also the cruel looking serrated edge that is very popular for the Skaven model range as well.

However, the Skaven don’t have a monopoly on curved blades with serrated edges, either. We’ve seen the Death Guard get tons of weapons with curved blades recently. However, the blade doesn’t look pitted and dinged up enough to be Death Guard – plus these teasers are generally a few months out and the Death Guard are coming out now…I’d say that probably rules them out.

the Dark Elves or the Dark Eldar might be good candidates for a weapon like this – neither faction has had a release in a while and they are known for their cruel weapons.

The other issue we don’t really have a scale for the size of this blade – it could be a random bit, a hand weapon or the size of a model’s body. It’s hard to really tell. The only real clue is based on the fact you can see tiny pits in the materials. Based on that, I’m leaning towards this blade being on the smaller side of the spectrum and not “man-sized” in proportions.

Another option is that it’s actually “organic” in nature and not a blade but a claw…That would be a pretty good twist!

Well Internet Detectives, what do you make of this latest rumor engine clue? Leave your thoughts, theories, and deductions in the comments below!

  • Please no more Death Guard. We’ve had too much of them recently, and we also had too many Primaris Marines. Can’t we have small releases anymore?

    • shawnlowrey

I have had time to paint other stuff at least. Last new models I bought were the Eldar Triad. Been painting other stuff all year. Ready for something to catch my eye now!

    • Dooms Day

too much deathguard? really? theres only 9 new units for a BRAND NEW subfaction. its not much at all. small releases are boring + annoying…

      • BrianDavion

when he says “no more death guard” what he really means is “NO MORE STUFF FOR A FACTION I DON’T PLAY” I don’t play death guard but this is a great looking release, bound to be very popular

        • Ghachii

In fairness, it does seem like they’ve been dragging out the 8th edition introductory releases for an age now. I feel like we got our first look at Primaris and the Death Guard a lifetime ago and have seen very little else since. White Dwarf has had blue Primaris Marines standing around heroically on the cover 3 issues in a row. I don’t begrudge anyone their shiny new toys, but fatigue has very much set in for me and I’m ready for a change of scenery.

          • BrianDavion

sure and we got the change with the death guard. let them have their goodies.

        • I actually do play Chaos but only having models for a sub-faction is annoying. I want there to be some new Havocs more than anything, but that’s never going to happen, but I cannot stand having tons of special Characters for a sub faction. My main quarrel is with the Death Guard Grenadier thingy, the far too many types of Tzaangor and every Space Marine name Character that’s an Ultramarine.

      • Spacefrisian

Not a new faction, just ripped from the chaos book and some stuff added, like with 1000 sons.

Could have done the same with Emperor’s children , Fulgrim, Tartarus tda (chaos phoenixguard) and a special walker, “new” faction.

        • Dooms Day

well an expand faction then, with almost entirely new units. Also EC will be be getting that down the line. its pretty safe to assume that at this point.

  • I_am_Alpharius

Certainly seems Skaven or Dark Elf-y (or even Dark Eldar-y). My guess would be that is a model from the Skaven warband for the upcoming Shadespire.

    • DoctorBored

Yeah, this would be my guess too. Will be nice to take a break from Marines, AoS or 40k, Chaos or not.

  • Defenestratus

It doesn’t fit the aesthetic at all, but I’m hoping that this is a new scythe for the Maugetar – attached to a new sculpt for Maugan Ra, the Harvester of Souls, Phoenix Lord of the Dark *Reaper* Aspect.

  • Red_Five_Standing_By

    Skaven, for sure

  • Vepr

    Definitely early Han Dynasty.

    • I_am_Alpharius

      Hmm not late Ming?

      • Dan Brugman

        No, it’s totally Song Dynasty

      • dave long island

Hmmm, might be late Ming, might be early General Tso.

  • Chris Hateley

    It’s a space marine.

  • Coltcabunny

It’s the Blue Oyster Cult obviously…

  • Manwiththedogs

Dark Eldar. My sheer force of belief will make it so.

    • Gamecock13

      God I hope.

  • Max Knickerbocker

Bet you a sawbuck it’s Tyranids for 40k. God but I HATE those bugs!

  • J Mad

    Dark Eldar

  • SilentPony

Its the top-knot on the White Scars decals for a plastic thunderhawk

    • Chet Atkinson

  • Kefka

Looks too wellformed for Skaven imo. My money’s on Dark Elves/Eldar

  • Carey_Mahoney

  • Gamecock13

Wow, and here I thought GW forgot they have more than Imperium and Chaos/CSM. Feel free to throw a bone to literally ANY OTHER factions. Not subfaction-specific…FACTIONS.

    • Gamecock13

Thinking on this for a second longer, there is clearly still a chance this is Death Guard or SMs. Nevermind my previous post… it probably is.

      • Munn

Let me play a sad song for you on the world’s smallest violin.

        • Gamecock13

The great thing about not voicing a real opinion in one way or another on a forum is that there is nothing to lose.

Stick around the game long enough, kid. You’ll get tired of the same ole’ song and dance too.

    • Nyyppä

Other than the mandatory generalist codex what did the legions other than DG get during this edition?

      • Gamecock13

Given your question, I think you and I may see subfaction codexes differently. I think it is crazy to give subfactions their own codex to begin with, particularly if every subfaction isn’t getting one. I play imperial fists as a second (third?) army…I was upset that they didn’t get their own codex…but neither did salamanders, or a slew of others. Its ridiculous to give subfactions their own codex.

My comment comes from the fact that just about any time GW releases a new edition, it always begins with imperium and CSM, like clockwork. So like clockwork, I can expect my Dark Eldar to either A) get something a year down the line or B) not get anything at all.

This is usually met with a slew of, “SMs and CSM rake in the money, of course they are going to start with them!” but doesn’t it stand to reason if you pour more lore, detail, intricacy, and (just in general) more time and effort into a faction that they’re going to be your best selling? It is circular logic. Sorry…this is 25+ years of frustration being vented.

        • Nyyppä

I’m not judging. After 3.5 this is the first time CSM got a real codex and they did not get any codex in 7th. I can understand your frustration and I agree that a single codex per faction is enough. There’s room for the uniqueness of each sub faction in the codices anyway.

  • Chet Atkinson

It looks a bit like a blade in the shape of a one-tailed comet

  • Chet Atkinson

Bound to be a new SoB model

  • Chet Atkinson

Or a female Squat in SoB armour with a Sigmarine comet blade

  • piglette

    New Hobbit weapons upgrade sprue.

  • ohhpoong

the official AoS FB page just teased about ‘vampire pirates’, so thats probably it

  • Just a player

    Bokonon confirmed

  • dave long island

It’s a serated Dothraki Arahk. What, they can’t fancy up their blades, now and again?

  • Brutus Motor

It’s the new Primaris Obfuscators, with Boltlaunchers and Tactical Hide-o-matic Cloaks…

  • MechBattler

“You know you’ve been playing Warhammer too long when…”

You can guess with 90% accuracy what army a model will belong to just by seeing a tiny nondescript part of it.

  • Sebastian Piotrowski

    Undead pirates are coming.

  • Jonathon Runge

Cool. Still more interested in just ignoring Age of Sigmar and continuing the old timeline with Ind, Cathay, and Nippon.
