Fantasy Flight Games has a new Mythos Pack for Arkham Horror the Card Game on the way – The Pallid Mask!

I’ve been a huge fan of Arkham Horror the Card Game so far. I’ll write about it every chance I get! Having played through a few scenarios, I’ve been really enjoying the game’s mechanics and story in equal measure. We’ve had some tense games and some close calls – but that’s the fun of playing Arkham Horror. Now, FFG is back with another new Mythos Pack announcement for The Path to Carcosa cycle:

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce the upcoming release of The Pallid Mask, the fourth Mythos Pack in The Path to Carcosa cycle for Arkham Horror: The Card Game!

The Pallid Mask follows the trail of the mysteriously disturbing play The King in Yellow back to it’s roots in France and takes you underground to the catacombs below. Story spoilers aside, this new mythos pack has some new mechanics that are going to kick in as well. There are 60 additional cards to add to your collection. The majority of the cards make up the adventure and the remaining 24 cards (2 copies of 12) form the additional cards added to the player pool.  The new player cards are upgrades to existing cards and some come with a new kicker ability that can aid you further.

Inspiring Presence is one of the new skill cards and it is quit versatile. With 3 different icons it can help you get the edge on a variety of tests. And if you happen to succeed in that test you’ll be able to heal some damage on an Ally card – and ready them to boot! Emergency Cache is also seeing yet another upgrade as well:

This is now the third version of the card to be produced and just like the other two, it can really boost your resource pool. It will cost you 3 XP to add to the deck, but now you’ll be able to add 4 resources to your pool or (perhaps more importantly) it can add 4 supply tokens to assets controlled by investigators at your location (or you can split it between the two options). This is actually kind of a big deal! That could translate into 4 more ammo for a weapon, or 4 more charges of First Aid. And you can give those supply tokens to the OTHER investigators! Emergency Cache lvl 3 has utility for days.

The Catacombs themselves are also changing the way the game is played. Typically the locations in the scenarios are setup before the game – not so in The Pallid Mask! Only the entrance is placed on the board. Players will take a handful of cards from the Catacombs deck – including the one you want to discover – and shuffle those together. Then they will take the rest of the locations and shuffle those in a separate stack. You’ll place the larger deck on top of the smaller to form the entire Catacomb deck!

As you traverse through the maze below, the cards will direct you on how place the cards. This can form a winding (and possibly shifting) maze of locations – each with it’s own different traps and trials to overcome. A similar mechanic was used in the Miskatonic Museum Mythos Pack, but even those had “set” connecting rooms. The big difference is that this labyrinth of catacombs will be different every time you play this scenario!

The bad news is that his pack is set for release sometime in Q1 of 2018. The good news is you can pre-order it now from FFG or your FLGS! The Path to Carcosa runs deep – are you prepared to face the Pallid Mask?

The Pallid Mask $14.95

From the streets of Paris to the city’s subterranean catacombs, your pursuit of the truth behind The King in Yellow leads you farther and farther from Arkham’s familiar landmarks. But the streets, the language, and the eerie, dark tunnels aren’t the only foreign elements at play. There’s something distinctly otherworldly in the Parisian catacombs…

In The Pallid Mask scenario, you and your fellow investigators will enter these tunnels in search of a stranger whom you believe must be connected to the events surrounding the performance of The King in Yellow at the Ward Theatre in Arkham. But with each new strange twist and turn, you’ll find yourselves only stepping deeper into mystery. Perhaps you can follow the tunnels all the way to the pulsing heart of the play’s mysteries, but there’s a chance, too, you’ll simply find yourselves lost amid the shifting landscape. What begins as a trek through moist and clammy tunnels of stone may become a journey that leads you under the earth, through The Gate to Hell, and straight to your demise at the Well of Souls or some other forgotten chamber.

Destined to be a fan-favorite, the scenario from The Pallid Mask utilizes the game’s locations in a novel way, bringing them into play only as you travel through them, and arranging them in a constantly shifting and unpredictable fashion. Each new step through these labyrinths could be your last.

I’ve got a Skids Deck with a Chicago Typewriter ready to do some exploring…Let’s do this!
