Take a look at how the story unfolds in Legacy of Dragonholt. It’s familiar and new all at once.

Legacy of Dragonholt is Fantasy Flight Games’ upcoming RPG set in the world of Rune Wars. Unlike other RPGs, Legacy of Dragonholt is a self-contained campaign that requires no GM to be played. Players create characters, but then embark into their exploration of the world of Dragonholt without the all seeing eye of a dungeon master, instead discovering a story that unfolds and reacts to their choices.

Part Choose-Your -Own-Adventure, part Telltale Game, all adventure, players are given choices that have a very real impact on the game. Any decision might alter the course of the story. Something as simple as discovering a group of bandits might trigger you to mark a Story Point, which will later have an influence on the narrative as it unfolds. Marking a story point is how the game tracks your narrative progress. There’s an activation token system that ensures each player has their hand at the narrative wheel, players trade decision making, flipping over an activation token that refreshes once all players have had their chance as decider.

Characters are given a little more freedom than in many of the source inspirations–there’s a world to explore, and characters are free to investigate what they feel like–they are not compelled to be noble heroes–their actions and agency is their own. At least within the confines of the system.

Sometimes your choices may reveal more of the world, others may close off sections of it. Your actions and choices will drive the story. And with six different quests to expire, each packed with story points that function as the game’s “X will remember that,” there’s a ton of replayability packed into the game. FFG boasts that you won’t be able to discover everything in a single playthrough.
