Top Ten 40K Minis I Expect in 2018

We’ve been waiting a very long time and the hints have been coming from GW – here’s what my money is on for 2018:

I’m piecing together this list based on content and hints released by GW, alongside a list of ancient minis and ranges that REALLY need some new plastic hotness.  Yes it’s great that GW can get long mileage out of metal minis – but at some point they become a negative, instead of a positive.

Abaddon

His mini is ancient and with a newly resurgent Guilliman – the Despoiler has to step up.  He’s gotten some amazing recent artwork that points to a new mini in the future. Chaos is too important to the current 8th Edition narrative arc to have Abaddon’s current mini leading the way.

Fulgrim

The Serpent has been mentioned multiple times in recent 40K publications and even has speaking roles.  Now that Mortarion is out of the way  – I strongly believe that Fulgrim is the next chaos primarch.

Leman Russ

There are a couple of obvious ways the next Loyalist primarch can go – namely The Lion, or Russ. I say Russ is the obvious choice for two reasons.  His return is strongly implied by the actions of Wrath of Magnus, and his mini could be very visually impressive if he returns with his pair of wolves alongside him – Freki and Geri.

Keeper of Secrets

There are hints from GW that 2018 will be the “Year of Slaanesh” and boy does the Keeper of Secrets need an update.  It’s ancient and sitting in that funky design area where you can tell GW just didn’t know what to do with Slaanesh.  While I think the nudity will be cast aside I’m interested to see what GW’s new Slaanesh aesthetic will be – based on the amazing Keeper of Secrets mini from earlier this year.

Avatar of Khaine

Another mini that is now holding back the entire Eldar range.  Mini-me needs a giant size boost to go head to head with the modern Chaos Greater Daemons. There is also that interesting artwork in the Craftworld Codex showing a giant Avatar going after Magnus.

Myphitic Blight Hauler

What’s up with the only missing mini from codex Death Guard? There’s artwork and a picture of a single copy of mini – but nothing for sale.  Extremely odd by GW standards of not releasing rules without models.  I have a feeling something funky happened with this kit and it will just drop into our laps out of the blue one of these weeks.

Odds and Ends

Following in the footsteps of this years “Rise of the Primarch” sries – I fully expect GW to jump back on that bandwagon in 2018. I think the triumvirate boxes will return. It’s an ideal vehicle to use to start to update all manner of named characters. Here’s who I think we will see:

A Phoenix Lord

Any would do – but Asurmen is a good solid place to start. He was the first of the Phoenix Lords and he really needs a new helmet.

A Chaos Marine Character

Again, the range is full of ancient models – but I’d love to see Fabius Bile get the full plastic Hellraiser-Haemonculus treatment. He deserves it.

Ghaz

Can we PLEASE get the most famous of the Orks a new giant fancy plastic mini?  You just know Ghaz should look like he could knock out a carnifex cold.

A Space Marine Character

There are so many to choose from, but Dante keeps coming to mind.  I keep dreaming of a Triumvirate box with a new Dante – Mephiston and Sanguinor – in a masculine counterpart to St. Celestine’s recent kit. It would be amazing!

~Did I forget anyone obvious? Who do you most expect in 2018?

  • BrianDavion

so far every trimvirate kit for the IoM has been mixed faction, I doubt we’re going to see a change to that trend

    • BloodAngel

But I would pleasure myself it they did come out with that.

      • BrianDavion

yeah still if I was gonna make a guess, it’d be some sort of “angelic trimvirate” featuring the Lion, Dante, and some new character? (maybe a IG commissar?)

        • that would be an interesting mix.

    • I_am_Alpharius

I don’t think any more Triumvirate box’s will be coming. I feel that was very much a ‘gimmick’ to promote the Gather Storm books.

      • WhenDidVicesBecomeVirtues

I thought that was their new goal with the triumvirates. Lesser selling models offset the cost of the popular ones.

      • BrianDavion

There will be more comining but it may be awhile off. in the aftermath of TGS, GW noted that public response to the Trimvirate boxes was fairly positive (it’s suprising there was no backlash for “I have to buy 2 minis I don’t want to get Gulliaman! GW is gouging me!”) so they’re hoping to do more in the future. this to me suggests the triumvirate boxes where something we’ll see more of but it might be a bit in the future as GW was testing the market with the three we got.

    • SonoftheMountain

except Ynnari, so there is precedent for a solo faction triumvirate box

    • Amon-Alex69

The eldar one really was mixed for sure..

      • BrianDavion

the eldar are Imperium of Man now?

  • Fergie0044

“boy does the Keeper of Secrets need an update”
“based on the amazing Keeper of Secrets mini from earlier this year.”

Come on BOLs, just take 5 mins to read over your articles before posting.

    • ZeeLobby

These random gap filler wish list articles are always rife with errors.

      • Spacefrisian

Yeah cause thats not how plastic battle sisters and thunderhawk is spelled.

    • Muninwing

to be fair, i’ve always thought that the Tzeentch GD should be called the “keeper of secrets”

      • Severius_Tolluck

Yeah having a Lady Boy Demon named “Changer of Ways” may have been right up their alley?

        • benvoliothefirst

Both of these ideas are so good that I’m instantly changing my headcanon.

        • Richard Mitchell

Hey man, its 2017 current year. We don’t do humor anymore.

      • Amon-Alex69

In a way, but they do hear every words and never forget one, that’s why they are called this way.
And also why some tried to summon them to ask them to reveal some in exchange for soul.

        • Muninwing

oh, i know… it plays in to Slaanesh being/exemplifying the primary temptation of the nobility, with their rumormongering and gossip creating strife in court.

it’s just… secrets and things not to be known by man are also in the lovecraftian cosmic horror that is Tzeentch’s purview.

  • Jaime Vila

Avatar have one fw amazing miniature.

    • Two actually. (yea, I know, many guys did’t like the sword-version anymore as soon as the spear one hit the shelves)

    • Spacefrisian

Gw had a nice plastic one, it also came with a alternate Keeper of secrets.

Dark elf Cauldron of Blood…Than Age of Sigmar happened.

  • Hamish Beer

Great Unclean One. For sure. The DG codex (or was it Dark Imperium) artwork had GUO’s that looked dynamic.

    • Fergie0044

Eh, the glottkin or maggoth lord kits offer a fairly easy to convert GUO.

  • Jack

    Abaddon definitely needs it

    • abaddonsmummy

      Agreed.
When he being towered over by Primaris marines and the new death guard he desperately needs some steroids from Fabius to bring him in line with at least the new Typhus size.
Over the years Terminator armour has grown, except his sadly.

      • Damistar

He scales OK with the current CSM terminators, but he doesn’t stand out in the unit. He could just be a champion. I hope when they redo him they don’t go overboard with the smoke and fire etc. Dark baroque majesty is the look I would choose.

    • The mini also is disturbingly fragile. People have started calling him “Abbadon the Armless”

      • Spacefrisian

Tells more about there own build skillz, mine doesnt have an arm problem, and i aint the only one. (mine isnt pinned either btw)

  • BaronVonYoloing

A list of 10 minis you expect this year and half are Chaos and only 2 Imperials? That sounds like a stupidly optimistic wishlist there BOLS.

    • ZeeLobby

      Haha. Too true.

  • TheWanderingJewels

is the Avatar Of Khaine actually worth anything on the field anymore? it’s been a joke for some time

  • Arthfael

What about an Ynnari specific unit or two. in the last few years surely they must’ve started blending those various Eldar flavours. Also, I bet what happened to the crawler is someone dropped the mould and it broke.

    • Muninwing

the Ynnari got one of the first triumvirates… doubtful they’ll get another.

i like the idea that the Ynnari are its own distinct faction, but i could actually see the 8th ed approach to them being the creation of the “Ynnari Codex” as a mishmash of Harlequins, Pirates, and a couple distinct units of their own.

      • I suspect Ynnari will get their own Codex sometime next year and tie into a Slaanesh campaign book, giving them the opportunity to cover them and Emperor’s Children. Lots of dramatic opportunities and the signs are clearly there, with Black Library putting out a lot of EC stuff the past year already and Ynnari having just started a trilogy of novels as well.

While BL does allow pitching again and encourages it to a degree, they still do commissions and authors are in the know for upcoming stuff as far as it concerns their projects.

        • Nightwalker

I suspect that it turns out that the Yncarni is actually a Slaanesh daemon all along, so the Ynarri dex will be integrated into the Slaanesh one as Slaaneshi Eldar.

I mean the Eldar are freely offering up their souls to the Yncarni, how grim and dark would it be if it turned out to be Slaanesh all along?

      • Well, he did spoke of units and not of a triumvirate 😉

  • Rahn1908

how about some new berzerkers while they are at it…

  • Luca Lacchini

Asdrubael Vect on the Dais of Destruction (NOT a Raider kitbash), a proper Lord of War unit.

  • Kevin Maloney

I note how you didn’t say Sisters of Battle. It’s okay, I’ve given up hoping as well.

    • Logan Miller

Really? I’m starting to get sick of all the Sisters of Battle releases GW has done with every single new edition? I mean, how much more do we need beyond zero new models in double digit years and literally the last new codex before they change editions months later making the new codex (that thankfully they only distribute digitally) obsolete???

  • James Regan

Ghazkull represents a real opportunity for an upgrade, given the time advancement- I reckon they should promote him into the ‘primarch sized’ pool.
Reasoning: We know orks get super ripped from fighting alot. Ghaz has been punching ‘nids for 200 years post-indomitus crusade. And orks aren’t a species with space marine’s longevity. Ghaz was a boy in M32, so pre-time skip he was 70ish, probably (ork boyz are newborns, and orks fight all their lives, so I don’t reckon he was more than a year or two old or so in m32, given he hadn’t won enough to even bulk up into a nob). He’s now approaching 200 and again, orks aren’t long lived like eldar or marines. Hell, given their constant state of war, I’d reckon most boyz are practically newborns.

He got to his ‘current’ size in less than half his life come the time advancement. So a perfect opportunity to give ork’s their big character, and its someone who already has backstory, so no more Cawl or Ynnead style ‘summoned from distant speculation’ for the orks.

    • Muninwing

Ghazkull, Ciaphas Cain (with Jurgen), and a new Necron lord character: next triumvirate of adversaries?

    • Severius_Tolluck

      you mean M41?

      • James Regan

        yup, whoops

    • Spacefrisian

Ghazkulls 4th model, gives the WD team something to write about as well.

    • LankTank

And in one of the last lores Ghaz was eyeing up the Arch-arsonist who is supposed to be one of the largest ork warlords that currently lives to take his domain as well. That would easily bring him to the level of the massive Warlord in legend that Horus and the Emperor had to gang up on.

  • DarthSquig

    No love for aspect warriors?

    • Gorsameth

You would think that if they were doing plastic Aspect Warriors they would have done so with the codex.

      • Spade McTrowel

They’re releasing NO new models (beyond the new armies in the boxed set) until All the armies have a codex.

        • LankTank

The article is releases for 2018. All codexes will likely be out by June and I still imagine SOMETHING will be released, if only one set

    • Spacefrisian

They dumb down on the Autarch, nuff said.

  • Heinz Fiction

Yawn @ namend characters. Wake me up when plastic Warp Spiders are announced…

  • Kiskatona

Noise Marines could do with some fancy plastics.

  • Kritarion

Plastic Avatar of Khaine vs. Plastic Fulgrim. Let the rematch happen.

    • EmperorOfMankind

The Avatar of Khaine seems like it isn’t much better than in past additions when no one used it.

      • No one except me. It did scare people by the fact alone that they never saw one in action. 😛 But apart of that…

        • EmperorOfMankind

I am going to field one once I get it painted. I WAAC games anyway.

    • And then we will see yet another Avatar blow up. Lets be honest, the Avatar is an unnamed character able to return. And thus he will always lose in a big showdown versus a named character.

  • mreindl

Interestingly enough, there were a couple of Phoenix Lord models missing from the Craftworlds Codex, but Asurmen was in there, ugly helmet and and all.

    • I_am_Alpharius

I don’t know what Codex you’re looking at as every Phoenix Lord model in picture in the model section – standing right next to their associated Aspect Warrior models.

    • Spade McTrowel

Shining Spears and Warp Spiders never had a Phoenix Lord. At least a model or entry – not sure about the Lore.

  • piglette

Blood Angels are getting squatted in 2018.

    • Jared van Kell

Actually I seriously doubt that, especially since their primarch will be making a return. Don’t believe me, look on the inside of the cover of the front cover. You will see a semi-naked angel, mid-flight, holding a sword, who I have on very good authority is indeed Sanguinius.
Now before you state it is picture from the Horus Heresy please note that in the bottom left of the picture you will see a Primaris Blood Angel firing his Cawl Pattern auto-bolt rifle.

      • Drpx

Bringing Sanguinious back would be such a boneheaded and contradictory move that I totally expect GW do it.

  • I_am_Alpharius

Well done a list of 10 random models that basically state the obvious….

Also the Blight-Hauler is due before the end of the year. 40k Facebook get that question a dozen times again and every time the answer is “it coming and whilst we can’t tell you when we can say it is sooner rather than later”. I suspect it may be included in some kind of army deal in Dec and either be release separately at the same time or a couple of weeks later in the week between Christmas Day and New Years Day.

  • Nogle

    ANGRON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Muninwing

    my pick?

    Triumvirate 1:
    – Luscious… er, Lucius the Eternal
    – Abbadon the Despoiler
    – a new Demon character for Slaanesh, more than just the Masque… maybe an embodiment of pride that connects well with Lucy.

    Triumvirate 2:
    – a new Iron Hands character (since they have none)
    – a new model for an Imperial Guard character (maybe for a legion we have not seen strongly, like the Valhallans or Mordians)… maybe Chenkerov?
    – a release of a new Canoness that would preclude the redoing of the Sisters… at least a decent codex that would invite players in.

that being said, i’d actually rather that they decided to peel back from SCs, instead making unnamed HQs have quality abilities that supplant them instead. Maybe not as hard as Captain Smashf**ker, but solid.

    • Lebowski1111111111

give it 3 months, you will see a ton of valhallans on the tabletop since they will become the goto for anybody bringing a conscript detachment and taking the morale loss reducing pistol relic.

  • pokemastercube .

how about dante, azural and someone from the custodial guard (to give them a commander)

  • “While I think the nudity will be cast aside I’m interested to see what GW’s new Slaanesh aesthetic will be”

    It’s going nowhere.

  • EmperorOfMankind

There is bare breasted daemon in the index though…

  • EnTyme

Since we’re just wishlisting apparently, here’s what I want for my Necrons:

    1) Update to the C’tan shard models. The Nightbringer and Deceiver could easily be a dual kit.

    2) Plastic Flayed Ones

    3) The Silent King

    4) The Void Dragon (Not a shard, mind you. The first actual C’tan to see the tabletop. Have Trazyn wake his a** up and fly away from Mars as The Neverending Story theme plays in the background)

    5) Pariahs. Please. They make more sense in the new lore than they did in the lore. How are these not a thing anymore?

  • memitchell

C’mon GW, do us a solid and give us Myphitic Blight Hauler salt and pepper shakers. For use in 40K, and in the kitchen. Cause that’s the dumbest thing I’ve seen in a long time. Myphitic R2D2? Myphitic Dalek?

    • Commissar Molotov

It’s like a trash can with herpes.

  • BigGrim

I’d like to see Ragnar Blackmane. The single oldest mini still in use.

  • grenstauf

I’m still wanting a sweet 2-part forge world Yarrick/Thraka diorama set like the Magnus/Leman Russ diorama base set for HH.

  • Doc Noble

This is a very reasonable list. I think alongside fulgrim and a new keeper of secrets, we could see new fiends of slaanesh and for emperors children to get much the same treatment as thousand sons with new noise marines and terminators, along with lucius and fabius

  • Thyran204

I agree that Ghaz badly needs an update. Can we, PLEASE, get a model and rules for Honsou!?!?!

  • Gamecock13

I know we have all been thinking, “CSM and SM haven’t seen enough love lately…”.

  • Jared van Kell

The model for the Mephitic Blight Haulers is in the codex. On pages 65 and 88.

  • Haunted memory

How about some basic chaos space marines. The current ones are rubbish with detail that just disappears, from memory they came out early to mid 2000’s with the only change being an increase in models from 8 to 10.

  • Grand_Master_Raziel

The Dante mini may be old, but it’s still pretty solid. Israel’s mini is much more dated looking, but that said, I’d rather see the Lion than a new Azrael. Plus, he’s the only Primarch we know is in Imperial space.

  • Ryan Miller

I see nothing about plastic sisters… but then they are never expected…

  • Gunther Clone C

I would actually prefer a new mini for Ghaz, and I don’t even play orks yet. I want him to definitely look the part instead of another Nob in Mega Armor in the mix.

  • Eldar please. All I need.

  • The14th

    What about The Lion?
