Mercenaries Themes have been out for a bit. Today we take a look at what you can do with its awesome power.

If you haven’t checked out the merc themes lately you have to check oout Irregulars. It has some GREAT bonuses and you can get huge extra points with the easy ways to meet the criteria.

Theme Force Bonuses:

  • For every full 25 points of units or warjacks in your army, you can add one command attachment or solo without the Lesser Warlock rule to the army free of cost.
  • Marshalled warjacks gain Flank [friendly warrior]. (Flank [friendly warrior] – This model gains +2 to hit and +d6 damage for melee attacks vs enemy models in the melee range of other friendly warrior models.)
  • For each unit, one heavy warjack gains Advance Move. (Advance Move – Before the start of the game but after both players have deployed, a model with Advance Move can make a full advance.)

Models Allowed:

Mercenary units
Mercenary character solos
Mercenary Battle Engines
And the following:
Brun Cragback & Lug
Dahlia Hallyr & Skarath
Gobber Tinker
Wrong Eye & Snapjaw

This is pretty much 99% of the merc models. What really is important to note is that you can get the bonus free solos and attachments for every 25 points in units AND warjacks. This means you can rack up 4 free solos if your warcaster has at least 25 points in battlegroup points in a 75 point list. Also, mercs have some heavy costing pointed solos so MAX value can be achieved and you can score up to 20+ free points pretty easily.
If you are willing to mess with jack marshals they also can get a pretty decent benefit for being marshalled in flank. This is best in a Shae list.

Check out this Captain Shae Irregulars List

This list has a lot going for it. You have fast moving infantry synergy with Shae. His spells coup de main and his feat can threathen whole boards if your aggressive early. But, you also have nasty supporting solos like Eiryss1, Savio, and Lord Rockbottom to threathen or buff where needed. Throw in a fun Freebooter with flank and all of a sudden that can trash anything that it get’s to if it is knocked down.

So in short, yes Irregulars is that good. 😛

Shae is a great model to build an army around. What I want to know is how to build a good Caine Hellslingers list. I loved the book. Now I want to make it a reality.

Short answer: play Cygnar, get Ace, a Squire, Arlan Strangewayes, a Journeyman with a Firefly and then 8 Chargers. Play in Heavy Metal theme.

Consensus amongst good Merc players is that Caine3 is pretty bad as long as Mercs get no Light Warjack with a decent gun. Right now, the only one is the Vanguard, which costs 10 for a single-shot short-range gun., Mercs only have the Galleon as a ranged jack, and that alone is not enough to justify playing Caine3 over better ranged casters like Gastone.

Also: don’t forget that Cain3 doesn’t do much support wise.

      • Apocryphus

Played against a Caine3 list with Vanguard spam, it’s as bad a list as it sounds.

Cool, thank you for the heads up on the advice. I was thinking Rovers and using Cain and Crew to tag and drive up the attack and damage modifiers to +3 and then get a POW 17 assault and roll under the irregulars. The biggest issue with that list is finding a way to use a arc node to tag something with calamity.

        • Jacques Package

If Caine has to hardcast Calamity (ie without his Witchmark shot), it costs him 4 Focus (he has to boost) and thus leaves him with only two to allocate or protect himself, so you either win that turn or die. Rovers simply lack the output to benefit from his feat as they have one shot for 16 points.

          • marxlives

True what are your thoughts like Reinholt pairing with him and using Rover spam with bumper unit like Skirmishers to set up the the assault and charge off? Throw in Eyriss and the Thamarite guy with Death Shroud?

          • charlesthoss

Rovers are too expensive to spam with him or anyone really. In addition, only the Assault shot gets a bonus from the feat, not the Point-Blank shot as it is classified as a melee attack. So most of your attacks on your feat turn, the best turn for damage and the one that Caine needs to cripple the opponent or lose, will be Pow14 or less, so not really damaging ARM19+.
