Every Tuesday is the BoLS Board Game Bonanza where our gang of gamers takes on a different selection of board games chosen by you, the viewer. What will they play? Will friendships be ruined around a game of Settlers of Catan, or is it a more innocuous game like Munchkin or Hero Quest that will sunder their bonds? Find out on Boardgame Bonanza.

Today we have a very special Board Games Bonanza–we have a preview copy of the Masque of the Red Death which is on Kickstarter right now from IDW. This has already more than quadrupled its Funding goals and unlocked some amazing stretch goals. There’s still a couple of days left to get in, but time is running out. Masque of the Red Death is a deduction and movement programming game set in the grim world of the short story by the Edgar Allan Poe. Players are nobles attending an extravagant masked ball while a plague ravages the country. Players are trying to do what nobles do – feast, dance, celebrate –become as popular as they can. But rumors swirl as the night goes on, and everyone feels oddly nervous each time the clock chimes. The nobles might be wise to spend some time listening to these rumors. It is becoming increasingly clear as midnight approaches that something sinister awaits.

At midnight, a horrible figure in the guise of the Red Death appears at the masquerade! It stalks amongst the rooms of the abbey, killing the nobles it comes across. The most popular noble wins… but that only matters if you survive the night.

The beautiful game board is divided up into the colorful rooms of the abbey…

Each player starts with 9 action cards (Discuss, Dance, Admire, Mock, Flirt, etc), and a personality card. Players have a player screen they use to hide their cards and plans. Each turn consists of three parts: play a card from your hand, perform the action to gain popularity or rumors, and move to the next room.

Each turn advances the clock, and as players collect rumors they can plan their movements after the clock strike midnight in order to avoid the Red Death. Plans can change at any time before midnight.

After midnight the game changes – players must move through the rooms based on the rumors they have gathered, they can no longer change their planned movement. Two red death cards are revealed. The Red Death takes the lives of the nobles in the rooms listed on the cards.

Survivors continue with their planned movement, more cards are drawn in ten minute intervals until 12:50. The noble with the highest popularity at 12:50 wins the game.
