Goatboy’s House of Dumb – Custodes Jetbikes of the Round Table

Goatboy here with a Custodes Army screaming to take over your tabletop – King Arthur style!

You know I love spamming a big punchy unit.  In fact it is probably my favorite thing to build a list around.  Normally I like Daemon Princes as they can fly, do a decent amount of damage, and have access to some killer spells.  Well this list isn’t like that as it drops the spell part and replaces it with Golden Gods who race upon the extra exhaust heavy Jetbikes of the Imperium.  I blame Abe for throwing this idea around in my head with his nefarious list building chitter chatter.  With that – let’s start with the initial idea.

Now as much as I think the Custodes book is a bit over costed there are some interesting things in there.  My favorite thing is the Shield Captain on a Dawneagle Jetbike.  Wow that is a ton of words thrown together and mixed with some Gold Glitter to get to work.  Anyway these are the guys that will end up being the Gel to create a whole mess of dumb nonsense in a rather “cheap” list to build.  I actually kinda think it does have some play as it has some movement, powerful assault options, and a Command point battery to create some crazy interactions.  You mix a ton of these guys, one of the cool banners, and some cheap AM guys to help build/regrow some Command Points and you got something sweet.

Tactics

The idea here is to give each HQ biker a Knight of the Round Table name.  As you play the game you need to keep a record of what each one does – that way you can see which Knight ends up being the worst for you.  I would use the Insignias from the King Arthur legends to try and keep everything looking cool and “thematic” beyond just – how many dumb things can I fit into an army and hope they work.  Each of the Knights have 7 wounds, 6 attacks, and with a built in 2+/4++ they are a pain in the butt to remove.  With a true CP battery to rebuild your stratagems turn after turn and you got something pretty annoying.  Plus all of the bikers are “objective secured” so while they won’t be taking anything away from a unit of troops – they will be stealing a ton of stuff from any non Troop based army.

Building the Army

Breaking down the cost – the most expensive thing is you need 4 boxes of bikes, one box of super terminators, and then as many basic Troops you can muster for the AM side.

Box of Terminators – $50.00
4 Boxes of Jetbikes – $240.00
3 Boxes of Cadians – $57.00
1 Box of 5 Cadians – $10.00

At normal 15% discount that comes out to a bit over 300 bucks – which isn’t bad for a rather nutty looking army.  You might get cheaper Cadians if you look around and find a way to get a single Terminator guy to remove another big fat $50.00 dollar cost to your army.  Will this army work?  Who the heck knows.  I just know it will look completely bad a$$ on the table top as you zoom and zip around the table like a crazy knight.

~If only you could add coconuts to all the Jetbikes.

Why didn’t Goatboy include a Shield Captain on Dawneagle Jetbike with Interceptor Lance, Hurricane Bolter and Misericordia? I think that this list could have done with one or maybe two.

    • Vachones

Definitely a missed opportunity for a cool knight themed list.

    • ZeeLobby

XD. Clearly they just need to increase their game pts lvl.

    • Andy Wise

      Very top heavy list innit?

You’ve got to question the principle of making something that floats top heavy.

    • Matthew Pomeroy

      Rofl, that is all 😀

  • bad mood

Well…..at least you’re aware of your issue.

  • Nick

I actually sort of love this list. I might steal this.

    • euansmith

It does look rather cool. I’d like to see it painted up so that each biker dude got his heraldry, like actual knights.

      • Nick

Well… I pulled the trigger. Bits ordered a bunch of fantasy greatsword bodies to kitbash with guard stuff. Going to go for a sort of futuristic bretonnians thing. 🙂

      • PLEASE someone make it and send in pics.

Just so StableAbe and Thomas stop poking me 5 times week to build it here for the studio…

But as an aside while editing this post I discovered the heraldry for the Knights of the Round Table – so COOL! I never knew they had established heraldry since medieval times.

        • euansmith

Reading the unabridged “Le Morte d’Arthur” is made quite odd, by the introductions to two of the volumes, where Sir Thomas Malory, the author, beseeches his readers to apply to king for Malory’s release from prison. A bit late these days, I’m sure.

          • Matthew Pomeroy

he may be up for parole by now 😀

        • Simon Chatterley

I saw some years ago a really cool Brettonian Knight unit all in the Knights of the Round Table Heraldry.

I’m sure I’m not the only person now looking at this and going “Hmmmmmm…”

  • ZeeLobby

I have to admit, these jetbikes are super cool. If there was some guarantee that their points represented their actual power in the game, I’d spam them day one. Right now I’ll just wait and see…

  • Drew_Da_Destroya

Why not make 3 Supreme Command Detachments to get an extra Command Point? You have enough Biker Captains to do it…

    • Adelaide Lee Rosa

Matched play: can have 2 of the same detachment.

      • Drew_Da_Destroya

Was that an LVO specific rule? There’s nothing like that in the book. Closest is basically a suggested rule that says for an Organized Event, 1-2000 point armies should contain 3 Detachments maximum… but that’s not a hard rule, just a suggestion, and doesn’t talk about repeated detachments at all.

        • Adelaide Lee Rosa

Looks like the “2 of each detachment” is no longer the case for ITC (LVO), but “3 maximum detachments” still is. So he couldn’t take a third Supreme Command in ITC for that reason. In a friendly game, sure.

          • Drew_Da_Destroya

            Yeah, that makes sense. Cool!

  • YetAnotherFacelessMan

I arrived pretty quickly at the captain on jetbike as the HQ I wanted to build out of the custodes book. Granted, I also want troops and elites, but it’s hard to argue with making sure your expensive character is mobile. They’re like land speeders with PUNCH that can’t be targeted unless they’re closest (or unless the only closer units are characters, with the beta rules).

    • Mr.Gold

add in a couple of Stygies VIII Sydonian dragoons to advance up ahead of him and watch your opponant tear out their hair in rage…

      • YetAnotherFacelessMan

Paint them in Bretonnian colors for bonus points. 😀

  • Ian Bush

I ran 3 bike Shield captains with Elysian allies the other day and they wreaked havoc against a guard army. The Elysians dropped right into my opponents face while the captains were killing 2 squads a turn between the hurricane bolters (2+ to hit reroll 1’s), charging a different unit, then morale to mop up.

  • Stormwolf

Sorry, anyone knows what was Goatboy’s score at LVO? How many games did he win? What place he ended up?

  • Muninwing

replace “1 box of terminators” with “the bitz of 1 Burning of Prospero Custodes with Aquila” from eBay and you’ve saved $35+

    • JJ

and if you dropped one captain.. you don’t need to buy a 4th box of jetbikes, and it gives you some points to put heavy weapons on the infantry squads…with very little loss of power.

  • Simon Chatterley

For a goatboy list I expected more spam

  • synapris

seriously, spam can be fluffy aswell. nothing wrong with this list if its not too cancerous to play against and is converted so the fluff makes sense.
if i didnt have a project right now, i already would have thought of this. maybe not knights of geometric funiture themed, but something heroic. also, lose the human baggage, who cares for maximum CP?

  • Tushan

Been using this since the first day custodes came out.

If bikes are upped in points then the foot sloggers really need to be lowered to compensate.

  • JJ

That! is how you get a nasty FAQ points adjustment…of course in a couple of months after everyone has purchased 10 jetbikes….

    • Pl4gu3 B4st4rd

THIS. GW come regularly here on BoLS to check Goatboy’s abusive spammy lists and write FAQs about that. Thank you Goatboy for pointing what’s wrong with this game.

  • Warrior24_7

    Spamming jet bikes, how original?

  • Sir Postalot

This list needs a few assassins as ehm… you know why ; )

  • Free as a Pass Rusher against

At least two people locally are building this list.
