Arkham Horror TCG: Meet Calvin Wright, The Cursed Investigator

3 Minute Read
Mar 31 2018

The Arkham Horror Files Universe is filled with unique individuals who struggle against madness. Calvin Wright is the newest investigator to join that long list and he brings a new sense of sacrifice and altruism to the investigator pool. Oh, and he’s totally Cursed.

via Fantasy Flight Games

As somebody haunted by the Mythos and beset by danger on all sides, Calvin is the archetypical Survivor, armed with nothing but grit, and driven by his desire to protect the one he loves. While his selflessness might have pushed Calvin’s ideology toward the Guardian class, we wanted to make sure Calvin had an ability that was useful in solo play as well as in multiplayer, so we decided to focus less on his martyrdom and more on his curse. With that in mind, almost every version of Calvin we designed started with the same sentence: “The worse things get, the stronger Calvin becomes.” This fits like a glove with the overall themes of the Survivor class, and also happens to fit Calvin’s art and flavor perfectly.

As Calvin developed as an investigator, designer Matt Newman said through the design process they were really able to refine Calvin’s abilities, weakness and play style to come up with something truly unique. He goes on to say in the full article that because Calvin’s abilities all start at zero, two play styles really developed with their players: The Risky & and the “fail-to-win” options.

The Risky version embraces the way Calvin gets stat boosts based on the amount of damage he has. The idea there is to stack it on early and get boosted to push ahead. This is probably the most obvious option. The “fail-to-win” play style takes advantage of cards like the new “Dumb Luck” card that reward you for flubbing a skill check. This style can have it’s own risks, but it’s a great way to use these cards.

Calvin’s Signature Weakness

Each investigator comes with their own signature cards – a weakness and some type of unique asset or advantage. Calvin is no exception. His weakness card is the first weakness card in the game that forces you to take not only damage, but trauma as well:

Taking trauma can actually benefit Calvin as he does get better statwise with some damage on him. However, take too much and he’s out of the game. Permanently.

Calvin also has some unique Deckbuilding restrictions. He can take all 0-5 levels of Survivor cards, but he can also splash 0-3 level spirit cards. He’s currently the only investigator that can take those cards based off of the keyword vs the class restrictions which is pretty cool too.

If you want to give this new investigator a go, then be sure you pick-up a copy of The Forgotten Age deluxe expansion from Fantasy Flight Games.

We think we know the history of the Earth, but there are secrets that lie beyond our reckoning and truths that could undo our entire understanding of the universe. When renowned historian Alejandro Vela discovers one of these secrets, the ruins of an ancient and forgotten Aztec city, it sets into motion a plot that could unravel the very fabric of time.

This expansion introduces five new investigators to Arkham Horror: The Card Game along with sixty-four player cards and eighty-seven encounter cards, including an all new exploration deck that presents new challenges for you to overcome as you find yourself falling into The Forgotten Age.
