Necromunda: Underhive Wars is the first video game adaptation of the Games Workshop tabletop game, with a unique setting and perspective on the Warhammer 40,000 universe, which saw a new version launch to critical success late 2017. Created by Rogue Factor, developers of Mordheim: City of the Damned, Necromunda: Underhive Wars blends fast-paced tactical combat with RPG elements and deep unit customization, coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Step into the twisted tunnels and rusted corridors of the Underhive in a new teaser trailer, seeing life from the view of a hardened Escher gang member.

In terms of Gameplay, so far all we’ve got is the following press release info – but it’s got some good take aways:

The turn-based tactical gameplay pits you against rival gangs in brutal gunfights, taking place in huge, vertical environments. Necromunda is a planet covered in poisonous ash wastes, forcing its population to live in Hive Cities, massive man-made structures built up over thousands of years to serve just one purpose: provide to the Imperium. In Hive Primus, the rich and noble live above the clouds in the Spire while the poorest and worst-off live in a massive and forgotten subterranean metropolis, the Underhive, where criminals fight in a perpetual gang war for control.

The info goes on to say that we’re going to get the following elements:

  • Turn-based Gameplay
  • Escher & Goliath confirmed, more Gangs on the way
  • Every fighter is highly customisable in loadout and appearance – Gangers have a “career which unlocks further skills, traits, weapons, and visual elements”
  • Vertical Environment
  • Deaths and injuries are permanent
  • Conquest Mode – an endless campaign with 4x mechanics
  • Online Multiplayer
  • Announced for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC

Now, other than that we can only guess as to what the developers have in store. If you’re interested, they do have an official forum you can check out as well. Some of the posters have raised some valid concerns and questions about the game including issues with Matchmaking, customization questions, and also how “Mordheim-like” this game will be. Lots of folks are hoping they are using it a baseline with a LOT of improvements…

The bright-side is that developer does have experience with GW’s IP and Mordheim is currently a “Mostly Positive” on Steam as of posting this article. However, it’s recent reviews do have it downgraded to “Mixed” – take that as it is (the last major patch was back in 2016). Either way, fans are hopeful that Rogue Factor has taken the lessons learned from Mordheim and really improved on the formula to make Underhive.

With it’s similar game elements (and the fact that Mordeim was basically Necromunda for Fantasy on the tabletop) it’s pretty easy to see the comparisons. Then again, maybe we’ll see more than just a tweak to the formula. Perhaps they could take the game in some new and unique directions…time will tell! Still no word on a release date but the game has been announced for PS4, Xbox One and PC.

What do you think of the Teaser Trailer? The game is probably a ways off – but are you getting interested in duking it out in the digital Underhive?
