The April White Dwarf is making the rounds and there is some new information floating around about the arrival of the Idoneth Deepkin. The First Enclave created by Telics using the “soul-releasing” on the Chaos God Slaanesh led to some surprising results.

The Idoneth Deepkin’s origin story is hinted at in the Daughters of Khaine book. The Aelves, working together trapped Slaanesh in the Hidden Gloaming – a space between the realms of Light and Shadow. There, they set about to freeing all the devoured Aelf souls that Slaanesh consumed during the End Times. We’ve seen a few short stories about how that has panned out so far.

What you may not know is that Telics’ first attempt to rescue the souls of the departed Aelfs resulted in the birth of the Idoneth. It’s only hinted at but, basically they turn their backs on their “savior” and flee. This is something I’m sure we’re going to see more of in the upcoming book.

That brings us to the next big news we’ve seen from the April White Dwarf – The Idoneth are coming back, and it’s to reclaim souls.

In the text, we can see reference to the Akhelians – these are the leaders and commanders. Aelves who have managed to master the beasts of the sea. These Deepkin also appear to have whole-souls, vs the Namarti who have Withered Souls.

The Namarti are the shorter-lived cousins of the Akhelians. Only surviving for a few decades at best, their only chance at a longer life is to “receive a new souls” – and it sounds like those souls are captured during raids on the surface. But this also explains their eye-less sockets and pale figure – it due to their incompleteness.

The last big clue is the grey-box on the left of the image. This is a short blurb about the sweet new Deepkin unit coming to the tabletop soon: The Eidolon of Mathlann.

“In times of dire need the Idoneth may call upon the souls of the departed to create their greatest weapon – an Eidolon of Mathlann. These spectral [apparitions?] are not the avatars of the ancient sea god for Mathlann is long dead, slain by Slaaneshi, but gestalt beings created from the shared soul energy of deceased Idoneth Aelves.”

It goes on to say that because these Eidolons are bits and pieces of an ancient memory of the dead elf god, each Eidolon is slightly different – some take on more aspects of the sea while others form a raging maelstrom.

The Idoneth Deepkin are deeply rooted in the idea of raiders from the deep who come up to claim souls. It’s going to be very interestings to see how the other factions receive the Deepkin.

What do you think of these new lore developments? How about the Idoneth Deepkin in general?
