After years of gamers attacking the Darkness, the Darkness attacks back. It’s a Shadowfell Showdown on Mordenkainen’s Mayhem. Two beings of darkness square off–a Nightwalker versus a Drow Matron Mother.
Mordenkainen’s Mayhem continues, with an extraplanar crowd thirsting for both blood and previews of creatures to come in May. Today two powerful opponents step into the polyhedral palace and battle each other to see who was born to the darkness, and who merely adopted it.
First up, we have a powerful being of shadow and undeath: the Nightwalker.
And the Nightwalker is an impressive foe to be certain. Weighing in at CR 20 with a massive attack bonus, and a melee multi-attack that reduces HP maximum along with damage on a successful hit, and a powerful aura ability that damages creatures that fail a Constitution Save (DC 21), while also granting advantage to the Nightwalker–he can sustain himself reasonably well.
And then on top of the innate combat capabilities, Nightwalkers also have a finger of doom attack and are capable of casting some fairly kill-y spells. All in all, this is a fantastic example of what a powerful Monster looks like.
Then there’s the Drow Matron Mother:
She also weighs in at CR 20 and comes with a whole host of abilities. She flies, natively, has a suite of 38 spells that she can call on, and a massive bucket of hit points–262 to be specific. Couple that with a high AC, a Force Beam attack which damages foes, and a tentacle rod melee attack that deals weird effects if all three of her melee attacks hit the same target and you’ve got a powerful foe who can handily take on a single party – especially since the Matron Mother is capable of summoning an ally to aid her in the fight. In this fight, we see the retriever
Mordenkainen’s Madness continues this week with more of the powerful monsters from Mordenkainen’s Tome of foes. This is the last match before the semifinals–so be sure and tune in!
