I don’t think anyone was expecting a new edition of Age of Sigmar this year – but what GW has revealed is only raising more questions…

Age of Sigmar is getting a 2nd Edition next month – June 2018.

That’s FAST – The game was released about this time of year in 2015 so it’s just under 3 years old now. That’s extra speedy for a new edition. We all know the game had a real wobbly start its first year before the General’s Handbook 2016 arrived and reorganized the game.

Here’s what GW is saying about the new edition rules-wise:

“The new edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar features the most comprehensive look at the core rules since the first Generals Handbook, and like those changes, the new ones will have an equally huge impact on the tabletop. The Studio team have gone through every phase of the game looking at how we can make the game faster, cleaner and more fun to play.

…we think it’s safe to say that you’ll like what’s in store – from an expanded hero phase and the addition of a new command points system to a more strategic double turn.

…no more shooting out of hand to hand combat.”

Simplification is the new black

The Streams are Converging

So let’s do some quick comparisons:

  • Age of Sigmar Core Rules: 4 pages
  • 40K 8th Core Rules: 8 pages

So the word is that herophase abilities will last all turn (so they are in effect HQ auras), then we have a new command point system coming (read as strategems), and limitations to shooting in hand to hand combat.

This all sounds familiar – it sounds an awful lot like 40K.  If you assume the rules are getting a little more complicated – well there isn’t that much difference between 4 and 8 pages of core rules…

Get My Drift?

It looks like GW is seeing the success 40K 8th has been and is pulling Age of Sigmar closer to its direction.  Now, sure the improvements to the background and the inclusion of maps is a key missing piece to set the wet concrete of the game’s background on a solid mooring.

I LOVE a good map!

But I have a feeling that we may be looking at very two similar systems with Age of Sigmar having more simplified statlines compared to its sci-fi stablemate. Still, though it’s about time Nagash’s minions got some new sexy minis.

~ What do you think of the new edition’s rules reveals and how different should both game’s rules be?
