Announced around this time last year, Chaosium’s return to the world of RuneQuest is finally here. Return to the world of Glorantha–of myth and legend and story and song with RuneQuest, Roleplaying in Glorantha.

RuneQuest is an interesting look at a divergent path in gaming. When RuneQuest originally came out, it was a step apart from the wargames that were the proto-origins of games like Dungeons and Dragons. Embracing myths and stories, RuneQuest wove a world where stories had as much power as the heroes in them. And now we have a look at an all-new edition.

RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha is an all-new edition of one of the world’s most influential and acclaimed fantasy roleplaying games. First appearing almost 40 years ago, RuneQuest is as dynamic and vital as ever. This all-new, deluxe edition introduces RuneQuest and its setting of Glorantha to new players everywhere.

Try out a skill-based percentile system that balances experience-based progression with deadly combat!

The core rules of RuneQuest are essential for players and gamemasters, as they contain all the rules for character creation, starting homelands, background history, professions, skills, starting Runes and magic, and the cults and gods whose influence will define your character’s activities. Further, the rules for character advancement are contained here, for the times between adventures.

RuneQuest is part of Chaosium’s D100 Basic Roleplaying system. It is intuitive and easy to play: virtually all rolls determining success or failure of a task are determined via the roll of percentile dice.

RuneQuest is a classless system. You decide what skills and abilities you’ll take and are influenced by the Runes that are associated with your character. Another key point about RuneQuest’s system is its advancement. You level skills up by using them–very reminiscent of an Elder Scrolls game, although I don’t think you can jump enough that you might accidentally fall to your doom.

At any rate, if you’re looking for a fantasy game that gives you a taste of something different, then check out RuneQuest. Or if you’re looking for more of Glorantha, I’m morally obligated to mention King of Dragon Pass–a hero’s journey-esque exploration of the world that cast you as the ruler of a people in the valley of Dargon’s Pass–every time I mention RuneQuest.

Happy Adventuring!
