Get ready to see some giant mecha piloted by live actors on the big screen. During a presentation at Anime Expo the president of Sunrise, the production company that has produced Mobile Suit Gundam, and Legendary Entertainment announced that they are partnering to produce the new movie.

The franchise was created in 1979, and has since expanded to animated films, video games, novels, toys, and models. They attempted a live action movie with Polestar Entertainment in 2000 –  G-Saviour – that didn’t fare well. Recent releases  have shown that Hollywood isn’t the best at adapting anime, and making stories focused on giant, piloted robots compelling. Sunrise knows the franchise very well, hopefully Legendary and project head Cale Boyter ask for their guidance often during development and shooting.

They confirmed that production is underway. The plot is a secret at the moment, so we get to wait for more announcements to see if it’s a new story or if they’re planning on adapting an existing anime. A press release put out by the companies hint that it may be in the Universal Century timeline with this short sentence: “an era in which humanity’s growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies.”

gundam.info has shared a possible poster – they also have a video of the panel, but it’s limited by location.
