Fantasy Flight Games has announced a brand new edition of the Arkham Horror Board Game. It’s a return to the classic setting and this time things are getting modular!
Arkham Horror the Board Games is getting a third edition and while this version is still designed for one to six players, it’s got a new twist on the board, characters, and the entire layout of the game:
Arkham Horror Third Edition sees players taking on the roles of investigators in the bizarre town of Arkham, Massachusetts. Unspeakable evil waits in the space between moments and just past the veil of our existence, and investigators must work together to unravel the mysteries of the Ancient Ones, risking their lives and sanity along the way.
One of the biggest differences in the new edition is the new modular board. This brand new set of hexagonal tiles are double-sided and fully interchangeable. You’ll be able to travel around the city of Arkham in new and interesting ways. The different scenarios alter the setup and will make each game different from the last.
The characters have also been updated. FFG is hinting that the investigators aren’t just going to have different abilities and stories – they are are also going to have customizable kits that you can setup before the game making each one even more interesting and diverse.
Here’s a look at fan favorite Jenny Barnes’ card:
In Arkham Horror, there are 4 different scenarios to take on (to start…) and each adventure has unique twists and turns. The game is more than a race to close the gates around the city now. Players will also need to advance the codex as the game progresses with archive cards. If investigators gather enough clues they can add favorable cards to the archive, while additional doom can add cards that will be…less than helpful.
The game is played in rounds with each round consisting of 4 different phases:
- The Action Phase – This is where the players get to act. They can move around town, fight monsters, discover clues and of course investigate the town itself.
- The Monster Phase – Monsters get to roam next. The monsters may go after your investigators or have some other motives…
- The Encounter Phase – Every neighborhood in Arkham has it’s own set of encounter cards and players get to interact with the locations in a narrative way.
- The Mythos Phase – This is the dreaded step where players take turns pulling Mythos tokens from the Mythos Cup. These tokens can add more monsters on the table, but may also add more clues as well.
If you’re looking forward to taking on the call of adventure in Arkham Horror, you won’t have to wait long. The game is already up for pre-order and is slated for launch in the fourth quarter of 2018!
The year is 1926, and it is the height of the Roaring Twenties. Flappers dance till dawn in smoke-filled speakeasies, drinking alcohol supplied by rum runners and the mob. It’s a celebration to end all celebrations in the aftermath of the War to End All Wars.
Yet a dark shadow grows in the city of Arkham. Alien entities known as Ancient Ones lurk in the emptiness beyond space and time, writhing at the thresholds between worlds. Occult rituals must be stopped and alien creatures destroyed before the Ancient Ones make our world their ruined dominion.
Only a handful of investigators stand against the Arkham Horror. Will they prevail?
Arkham Horror Third Edition is a cooperative board game for one to six players who take on the role of investigators trying to rid the world of ancient beings known as Ancient Ones in the 1920’s. Based on the works of H.P Lovecraft, Players will have to gather clues, defeat terrifying monsters, and find tools and allies to stand any hope of defeating the ancient creatures that exist just beyond the veil of our reality.
Take back the night…if you dare.
