Games Workshop’s latest Rumor Engine is out and it’s going to be really hard for Tyranid Players to stay calm with this one. I want to believe…

Is the latest Rumor Engine a Tyranid? Oh I sure hope so. I’m trying NOT to freak out and get excited but it’s just so in line with the Hivemind’s design tenancies. I mean, look for yourself:

I mean, C’MON! Having built and painted too many Tyranids at this point it’s hard not to draw those comparisons. The segmented plates, the organic-looking rough edges …but one thing has me questioning my assumption and that is the paint job. Most of the time, the studio will paint Tyranids to match an existing Hive Fleet. Let’s take a look at a newer model to compare:

Notice the similarities. Segmented armor plates. The organic-looking edges. But look closely at the paint lines. GW’s standard schemes use a very noticeable line job to add color. This is apparent in every studio scheme that shows up on their website:

Depending on the Hive Fleet, it can be pretty pronounced. Or more subdued:

But in all three cases you can see the similar design patterns but the paint doesn’t exactly match-up. Maybe I’m just being nit-picky and it’s not that big a deal. And while I would LOVE to see some new Tyranid models, I’m trying to think of other examples that follow this look. The Tyranids aren’t the only ones that have this new segmented armor look after-all. We pointed out a couple in previous Rumor Engines.

Let’s not discount the AoS side of the house. Could this be related to the Warbeetle that Alarielle rides? Or perhaps Slaanesh?

And speaking of Aelves and Slaanesh, what about Morathi and the Daughters of Khaine? They have that segmented look too, although theirs is a tad cleaner and less jagged:

What if it’s all just a redherring and this is for something COMPLETELY different. What if it’s for a dragon?

Segmented Armored Chitin comes in all shapes and sizes after-all. Heck, even the Magmadroth-type beast or a variant could be an option:

That’s the tricky part about the rumor engines – we don’t know the scale of the thing we’re looking at. As much as I WANT it to be a Tyranid model, I know there are other things it could be. But it’s difficult to not get excited about the possibilities…
