Today on Tabletop Spotlight, we take you through the Beginner Game for the upcoming Legend of the Five Rings Roleplaying Game. Full of honor and strife and the second best of all the Clans (Crab), come take a look inside the Emerald Empire.

The Legend of the Five Rings Beginner Game is a great way to get started roleplaying in the Emerald Empire of Rokugan. Step into a world beset with conflict, where honor is stronger than steel–step into the world of the Legend of the Five Rings. You might have played the card game, or even the older editions of the RPG, but now Fantasy Flight Games has put out their own version of it, using custom dice that lean into the internal struggle of the game…but more on that in a minute. For now, step inside the Beginner Game.

The L5R Beginner Game has everything you need to get started. With pregenerated characters from four of five great clans (Scorpion is suspiciously absent from the playerbase–and of course the best clan, Mantis Clan, has yet to be uplifted), an excellent tutorial for learning all the rules, and a setting guide (and some amazing maps) to introduce you to the world, you’ve got a game in a box. This is probably two or three sessions at most (though if you’re in it for the long haul, you could probably knock it out in a long session) but it’s everything you need to take these characters and get running in the world.

Legend of the Five Rings: Beginner Game – $39.95

In Rokugan, it is said that honor is stronger than steel. While even the finest blade can bend and break under the heat of the forge, the Emerald Empire’s society has been folded in the forges of politics and war for more than a thousand years, and it has not yet broken. The society of Rokugan follows a divinely ordered pattern set down by the eight Kami, who shared their celestial blessings with the mortal realm. Rokugan is a land of strict social stratification, where an improper look at the wrong time can mean death.

This is an era of sudden change and upheaval, however. Mortal schemes, natural calamities, and celestial turmoil alike have disrupted the political, military, and spiritual equilibrium of the land. Long-simmering rivalries and fresh betrayals ripple through the courts and on the battlefield. The Chrysanthemum Throne is beset by threats from without and within, and the honor of the seven Great Clans—the families descended from the heroes of legend and sworn to rule their lands in the Emperor’s name—shall be put to the test.
