Tabletop Spotlight: Overlight The RPG

3 Minute Read
Sep 25 2018

Today on Tabletop Spotlight, we take you through Overlight, an RPG of light, mythology, and fantastic color where you can find adventure drifting between the fragments of a world transformed–or perhaps undone–by humanity.

Overlight is an RPG that begins with a world fractured by Humanity. In the ancient past they were given the Keys of Creation by ancient cosmic beings and told not to use only one of them. We all know how well that goes down–and in short order, the world is turned inside out. The burning heart of the world is now the unending sky and beneath, an ocean of inky stars. This is where Overlight begins.

I’ve been following this one with interest since the Kickstarter Campaign. It combines a lot of interesting flavor in to this hodgepodge setting, representing the now-broken world. It’s a game of “kaleidoscopic fantasy among the shards of a broken world,” meaning that you can find a blend of disparate folk and cultures all working to manipulate the power of the Overlight–the bright white light that fills the sky above.

Wielding a power called Chroma, which, as you can guess from the name, comes from the mysterious power of the Overlight, the Skyborn heroes are able to make their world a better place. There’s a lot of action that drives the game, but its action grounded in mythological undertones. The world is basically calling out for heroes constantly. The players are Skyborn–heroes that have the power to turn the Overlight into one of the different colors in the rainbow, each of which has its own associated attributes and powers and people.

There are many strange folk in the worlds of Overlight. From the gentle wisdom of the ape like Hamanu to the plant-wielding Banyan, you’ll find a whole bunch of wildly different fantastic races to play as in the game. Each worldshard has its own color of light associated with it, its own people, and the Skyborn are the tie that binds the world of Overlight together.

In the course of a Game of Overlight, you’ll be putting die pools together from your skills and attributes, and rolling all manner of polyhedrons to try and accomplish success–and Overlight is a game on the Higher end of High Fantasy. Even at the beginning of the game, Skyborn Heroes are the stuff of legends. If you want something that fits in well alongside games like Exalted or Godborn, Overlight is a great place to jump in.

Overlight Core Book

Welcome to Overlight, a roleplaying game of kaleidoscopic fantasy among the shards of a broken world. It’s a world in which seven great continents hang in the sky, stacked almost vertically far above an unending sparkling sea. And shining down upon it all is a limitless light, emanating not from a great sun or moon, but from the sky itself: the hallowed Overlight.

The heroes of this world are called the Skyborn. These individuals are born to disparate folk and cultures the world over, and who on some deep genetic or spiritual level are driven to make the world a better place, knowing in their hearts that things are not as they should be. The Skyborn are able to consciously manipulate the Overlight, fracturing it into seven distinct colors and using it to power remarkable abilities called Chroma.
