James Gunn turns the super hero genre on its head, and asks: what if Superman were evil from the start?

This project came to be before Gunn was fired from Disney, and hired by DC to do some repair work. It definitely takes a lot from Kal-El’s story with the falling from space and cape bit, but this isn’t a family friendly superhero tale. Not in the slightest.

What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? With Brightburn, the visionary filmmaker of Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither presents a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror.

The cast is led by Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, and Jackson A. Dunn. The script by Brian and Mark Gunn, and David Yarovesky is in the director’s chair. There’s not much beyond the trailer right now – but given that this was supposed to be announced at last year’s SDCC and has been in limbo for awhile, I’ll take it.

Brightburn hits theaters on May 24th.
