Aquaman’s sense of levity helped propel it to $1 billion at the box office. DC is hoping for more of that with their next release, and it’s got a new trailer that attempts to convince audiences that this hero isn’t so serious.

For those not up to speed: 14-year-old Billy Batson (Asher Angel) befriends comic book nerd Freddy in a new foster home. Soon after he is approached by a mysterious wizard (Djimon Hounsou) who has been looking for the right person to take on his powers. He gives the teen these powers, and all it takes is for him to say “SHAZAM!” to turn into his alter ego (Zachary Levi).

This movie should feel kinda like Big, but with a teenage boy in charge of a superhero instead of a toy executive. It should be fun and goofy with a young sense of humor, and a pile of snark. See if you think if DC has succeeded…

I know the previews we’ve gotten are not making the entire fan base happy. I’m up for a popcorn superhero movie packed with corny jokes and a hero with heart – especially as a palate cleanser between two rather heavy Marvel movies. Let’s hope that DC’s gamble here pays off. I’d like to see the studio get back on its feet and making decent movies again.

DC’s Shazam flies into theaters April 5th.
