GMM Studios is back with more of the Hexfleet Virules build and paint–come see how the pestilent presentational display comes together.

Hello BoLS readers!  It is time for the next installment of the giant Hexfleet Virules army.  In case you missed the last one, H.V. is a giant Nurgle army I am currently painting for a client who has spent over 8 years modelling and collecting it. You can find a link here to his facebook version.

An army this big, the display needs to be huge as well.  Starting out, I began with a base frame of around 7’x’5′ to give myself ample room. This backdrop will have a theme more evident as I make progress, but as a base idea I have always wanted a really nice solid urban photography display.  If you’ve seen some of my wok from years ago, I used to use modular buildings in this same style.  They leave a lot to be desired for bigger armies though, and this batch of models being a great excuse, I decided it was finally time to make one happen.

One nice thing about being solid instead of modular is being able to add a lot more detail.  Connections using rubble, planks, anything, are more possible and allow for more platforms to show models off.

In that vein, the whole reason for being so vertical is also to allow more models to be seen in shots, and better photography.  If you saw the pre-paint shots, or have seen generally any army laid out on a flat plane, you’ll notice it is really hard to see a lot of anything beyond the front row.  This sort of backdrop design allows me to really get my camera and lights into every models face without moving anything around, and still looking very cinematic, which is just another layer of fun I like in my photography.  Every photo should look as if it is catching action, and models bursting out of the terrain, not a lifeless plastic figure sitting on an equally lifeless plane.

Very happy with how these buildings came out, but the real treat will be adding goofy signage.

That is it for this time.  Keep an eye out for future posts where I start applying paint!  See you then.
