Privateer takes you a tour of taking their latest MiniCrate all the way through design.

Take it away Privateer:

Hello, everyone, and happy New Year! For my first Insider of 2019, I’d like to tell you a bit about the concept art process for the MiniCrate exclusive model Raggedy Mandy. As an alternate model for the Ragman, the spin on this model was to turn her into a creepy doll with a nod to a toy that shares a similar-sounding name.  Adding a little bit of a Victorian era spin, I worked up the following rough sketches.

The group enjoyed the second sketch with the following requests:

  • Try a lower skirt.
  • Gives her a hat like Ragman’s.
  • Try stitched together body parts.

With those notes in mind, I worked up A and B.

Option A was the winner, so all I had left to do was a quick color pass, sketch up her cane, and come up with some pose sketches.

Matt thought her pose was a little too close to Alexia’s, so I tried out a few more, drawing some inspiration from a Stanley Kubrick film I’m a fan of. I preferred pose B, but it wasn’t quite hitting the mark, so some folks suggested I draw something like a ragdoll marionette puppet.

And thus did was she all dolled up and ready to go.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this peek behind the curtain for the creation of Raggedy Mandy.

There’s still time to sign up for this monthly MiniCrate model, so head over and secure your copy today!
