In Defense of the 10th Company

I have been getting emails and requests from a lot of readers asking if doing a whole Space Marines 10th Company Scout armylist is viable and could it hold its own on the tabletop. Well, it there is anything ole Darkwynn likes its a challenge, so lets roll up our sleeves and get to work!

My first idea was to have a strong core of scouts that will enable you to score, engage and maneuver into key areas and finally be versatile on defense. The main idea of the army is to have supporting units that will be able to overwhelm certain sides and counterattack quickly if they need to or at least have the option to stay back also and play defense.  After playing around with the numbers a while, I decided to go with a large numerical force of scouts who locate the foe, then call in limited chapter assets to help nail em.

10th Company with Chapter Support List  – 2000pts

Tactics
The idea is to have two anchor units in the back which will supply suppressive fire or some anti-tank fire to key areas when need be. They should be in area cover which will give them a 2+ cover save with Bolster Defense and camo cloaks. You have the option of splitting these into three areas depending on the mission and still have those areas that will give you covered all the way around. Telion is just supposed to rend out key targets hopefully like special weapon models, Exarchs, and HQ types and so on. The 5 man scout squads will ride in the storms and will help with the first turn charge and with two scout squads charging one area you can get a nice -4 to the leadership modifier on top of whatever you win by. With the Scout Bikers you will be able to get into position to setup the overwhelming flank to drop off your drop pods with locator beacons or play harassers on side units. Thunderfires will be great for taking out horde units or making units move through difficult terrain. Your Master of the Forge is just going to sit in the backfield sniping at either land raiders or hard targets hoping to do some damage. The Vindicator is the only odd unit in here but it plays as a bait unit that will sit in heavy cover and either guard your two scout units in the backfield and makes enemies think twice before advaning into your firebase, or play hunter if ther are any bad guy Terminators or other big units with low saves.

While not a pure 10th company list, I think this one still has the 10th company feel to it and will be able to hold its own against most things. Your big fear would be high count of low saves such as 10-20 terminators or units such as Nob bikers or Thunderwolf Calvary but with the Sniper rifles and other items you can always slow them down to buy you time. The key unit that will take time to master would be the Land Speeder Storm and using the assault the correct way. You will have to judge distance and assault from key areas that will limit how many attacks your opponent will get. This means you have to plan assaults on the very end of units or from angles so they consolidate in a limited area. This would give you a higher chance to do more damage to the unit using your powerfist and other attacks to lower their leadership even more with the Cerebus launchers.

I’d love to hear thoughts on this and theme lists in general. Have at it guys!  Darkwynn out.
