40K: Not Another Exodite Army

Hello again boys and girls, Unicorns and children of all ages!  Brent here, talking today about the awesome-sauce that is the mighty Footdar!
First up, if you were expecting another installment of my Schoolboy’s Primer: Daemons, I’m afraid I’ll have to disappoint you.

I started graduate school this past week… and it’s all for you, my little chickies.  I want to be known and loved online as Dr. Brent.  It’s appropriate to spend 50K on a bad joke, right?

Why yes it is!

Speaking of bad jokes, I’m not sure what to do about Larry.  He sent me yet another memo: let’s take a look.

To top it all off when I got here today I discovered my access had been revoked.  Luckily, I had the foresight to borrow Nick’s when I went through his things at WarGames Con.  I’m proactive like that; I know this is a big misunderstanding but I don’t want to bother Larry with it right now.

He’s a busy man.  As you can see, I think it’s making him a bit unhinged.

Okay, on to the Invincible Footdar!

Early this year Fritz was looking for an Eldar partner for the Team Tournament at WarGames Con.  I knocked off the competition rose head and shoulders over anyone else, so was the obvious choice.  Fritz picked me and I was once step closer to Jawaballs

After a month or so of emailing, he said, “Brent, I know you’re a mighty intellect with all these great ideas, but I really can’t keep up!  Can’t we just play a Footdar?  Everyone (Reecius and Blackmoor ain’t ‘everyone,’ but okay!) says how powerful they are, and I’d so like to win for once.”

“Fritz,” I said, “you’re way too hard on yourself – what about all that 5th dimension stuff I taught you?  Never mind.  If it means that much to you, let’s do it!”

That’s how I remember it happening.  It’s as true as this and this.

Between the two of us, we developed a plan and proceeded to implement it.  Basically, he’d be the disruption and I’d be the firebase, so I planned and built my 1000 point army accordingly.  Ultimately, Fritz wasn’t able to make it to WarGames Con but I got a fun army out of the deal.  I teamed up with Goatboy and we did a respectable job, winning two and losing one.

If you’re interested, my army was Elle-Drag, a squad of Fire Dragons, and two each of Storm Guardians and Dark Reapers.  The two models I opened the article with are my Warlocks with Enhance.  No, I’m not suggesting the army is competitive!

Now, when it came to building it I already had an Eldar army I could have used, but frankly nothing inspires me like preparing for a big event.  I decided to start a brand new army from scratch!

I spent a month brainstorming ideas and looking around Ye Ol’ Blogosphere for inspiration, but frankly I couldn’t find anything original.  What do you think of when you read the words ‘Eldar conversion’?

Yup.  Exodites.

Well, piss on that!  I decided to build an Eldar Warhost deep in the process of embracing Slannesh.  I worked hard on it; every model is converted and painted to the best of my ability.  I’m not suggesting it’s the best thing out there, I’m saying it’s the best I can do right now.

I owe thanks to two individuals for their inspiration and assistance.  It simply wouldn’t have been nearly as nice without their help, so I hope you’ll allow me the indulgence of saying nice things about them.

I’ll be brief… just like today’s post.

First up is the Master Manipulator (every store needs one): he pointed out how formulaic my painting had become.  I use a lot of speed-painting techniques, because typically I paint armies, not models.  He made me take a hard look at what I was doing versus what I was capable of, so I spent the extra hours painting these Eldar in traditional ways.

Next is Lauby from Laubersheimer Industries: he’s one of the founding members of the Int’l House of Paincakes, but at the time we’d never so much as chatted.  I needed an experienced eye and he was gracious in with his time and appropriate in his advice.  Like I said, this was a stranger who not only helped me but kept my work in progress pictures to himself, simply because I asked.

So now WarGames Con has come and gone but I’ve got plans for my Eldar.  It’s sitting at 1000pts but I’m going to expand it to at least 2K and use it as my hobby army.  It’s not all about competitive play in my Empty Blue Digital Headache!

My chickies, I tell you true: our hobby is really a small community.  We can differ in or perspectives and opinions, but when push comes to shove I think it’s important we stick together.

After all, we can all agree we’re better than cardgamers!

Okay folks, I hope you like my Eldar army, but more to the point I hope you forgive me for putting off the Daemons’ article another week!  Trust me, both the final articles are written but I wanted the extra time to make sure they’re perfect.  Thoughts?  Opinions?  Feelings?  Need a hug?  For the last, stop by Strictly Average… I need the sympathy!
