Goatboy’s Model Review! – Plastic Daemon Prince

4 Minute Read
Aug 25 2010
Warhammer 40K

I have had the pleasure of building 2 of these models as well as using parts on another Daemon prince model for my new 40k Chaos Daemon list. So here is my review of the new kit.

Lets break down the review into separate sections. Not every model can be the best thing on the block, but with a little work and thought any model can pretty awesome as long as the base components are still good. So lets look how I rate this model.

Value
With this game getting more and more expensive every day, it gets harder to justify some new plastic crack purchases. I know when I look at a model, I just don’t look at it for the one build design, I look at it as a way to help me create multiple modeling options. That is one of the things I like about GW figures, is that normally they have lots and lots of extra bits spread around that plastic frame. This model has 3 different chest options, 2 different loincloth options, as well as wings, different weapons and all kinds of crazy heads. As you can see in the Daemon Prince pictures below, I was able to create one full model and use pieces to help create another Daemon Prince. Heck I still have swords, arms and heads left over too. All in all, for $33.00 USD you get a lot of model to work with in a nice package. Heck the wings along are pretty sweet when you think about all the times you need wings for other armies.

Look/Form
Now here is where the camp gets split up. This model is one of the new GW style sculpted works. The muscles are over generalized, the pieces are pretty crazy, and some of the builds are locked in place.  Its broadly similar in ways to the WFB Minotaur models. I am fine with some of the crazy muscles and over the top design that the new GW is pumping out. In fact, I find them to be kinda refreshing when compared to some of the older models. I blame my love of old 90’s comics. I do wish the pieces had more pose-ability with more ball joints and other options for the arms as we’ve seen on the Tyranid kits. I don’t like how two pieces fit to become an arm, leaving you an awesome mold line down the center on some of the designs. I also wish you could set up with two swords on either side giving you a dual wielding monster.

Paintability
Now this is where I think they did pretty well. Most of the pieces are pretty easy to paint and get too. You have a lot of options on the form, leading you to creating really cool painted figures. All the parts are easy to reach and it is a pretty easy thing to get a brush in there and get some paint on it. There isn’t any cross over with different model parts, crossing over and blocking your paint brush. All in all I found the model fun to paint, with lots of areas where you can model and blend the form pretty easily. Also each section was pretty separate meaning you can easily pick out what is what when throwing on some coats of paint.

So all in all I liked the model. I could always wish for more, but really I am pretty happy with what we got. It is much better then the metal monstrosity that we had to use before. I don’t know how many times I saw terrible wings added to the body. The only one I liked was the Nurgle Daemon Prince.

The body is from Troll Forged Miniatures with legs from a Sentinel. All the other pieces are from the new kit. The top Daemon Prince had a new head put on, but everything else is stock. The second DP is another stock one as I planned on having “twins” in my 40k Daemon army. Pics of that army are showing up on my personal blog as well as lists and thoughts on how I plan on playing them.
