EDITORIAL: Warhammer Fantasy 8th Not Being Played Much?

2 Minute Read
May 5 2011

Maybe it’s just me, or my gaming club, or the area that I live in, or the internet blogs that I read every day, but it appears to me that Fantasy 8th Ed. isn’t being played much.

This is going to be a pretty short blog post but I really wanted to throw some things out there.  WHFB 8th Edition for me was a pretty big swing and miss.  I loved playing Fantasy back in 7th Ed.  Sure, the army books creeped up on me like you wouldn’t believe, and I’ll be first to admit that the balances were worse than 40K for a long time.  Army books like VC, Daemons and Dark Elves really put the hurt on the longevity of 7th Ed. and many players till this day believe that those 3 books was responsible for 8th Ed. coming out.

Crazy?  I don’t know.  On one hand, we have the standard codex creep mannerisms that GW is known for and the other is the core rules the govern the entire 8th edition.  I’m at the point where I haven’t played Fantasy in a long, long time.  The newest edition of Warhammer Fantasy has a huge emphasis on horde-formation units, overly powerful magic spells, pre-measuring and random charges.  To me, there’s a lot more random, a lot more things dying and a lot more frustration.  As if that isn’t enough, but every time I visit a Warhammer Fantasy faction forum, I notice talks about using house rules and specific army restrictions.  Man, I don’t know about you guys, but whenever I see house rules and item bans, I immediately think something is not right somewhere.

Uploaded the results from SCGT, just for giggles:

Interesting seeing the same armies place top 3 in this edition as last edition.  This particular tournament was a low-comp tournament, meaning that there was no item restrictions or special bans.

What do you guys think?  I feel like I’m taking crazy pills here.  What are you seeing in your local FLGS and clubs with Fantasy?  8th edition has been out for over 8 months now, so the general trends should be visible.
