We all say Warhammer 40000 is super pricy, so I threw down the Gauntlet to some of our tournament ringers – Build a lean and mean army as effective on the tabletop as it is easy on the wallet. Today we look at Grey Knights.

First some ground rules.  We targeted 1850pts, and all prices are full retail (plus any required bitz).

Today’s list was offered up by tournament ringer and all around nice (and disturbingly tall) guy Paul Murphy (Ulth).  He whipped up this lean and mean Grey Knight list that is easy on the wallet as it is nasty on the tabletop.

This list doesn’t even need any special hard to find minis.  You just grab standard stuff off the shelf with no extra squad members to track down or trade for. Here’s what you need:

Draigo
Terminator Librarian
Techmarine
2x Dreadknights
2x Grey Knight Terminators
1x Grey Knight Squad

Total model count: 20

The total damage comes out to $305 full retail (I’m sure you all know where to get it even cheaper).  Not too bad for a lean and mean Draigowing that is fairly quick to paint up and get on the tabletop.  That comes in over a $100 less than Ben Mohlie’s Cheap Ass Space Marines list – but I will leave it up to you to decide which is the more effective army.

We will have more of these real money optimized lists in the weeks ahead, but with a little forethought and planning, you too don’t have to break the bank to break into the winner’s circle.  We will be expanding into the xenos in the near future.

So what effective and cost-optimized lists can you come up with?  Share please.
