Welcome to another installment of “This Week in 40K Podcasting,”  Here is this week’s top 5!

The Heroic 28s – Episode 99

Highlights:  This week the guys are fresh back from their X-Wing Regional event, so tournaments are on their mind!  They kicked off the show with a few announcements before moving on to what they have been up to lately in gaming and the hobby.  This included a lot of X-Wing so not so much 40K for the guys, but Uncle Buck was there to save the day!  Next, the boys moved on to their main topic of the show: The Current Tournament Meta!  The guys started off by talking about Texas WargamesCon and their experience there with the early 7th edition meta.  They discussed how the event itself really went away from a national competitive event to more of a local RTT event, with the competitive edge of the tournament being very much dulled.  This seems like the competitive community is drifting apart, and this is not a good thing for the game.  They talked about the increase in popularity in ‘other’ games like X-Wing who are taking the place of 40K for good, big competitive games.  They discussed where they think the game is going and how it will be more regional on how it is played as opposed to a standard tournament format.  Next, the boys broke down each and every army in 40K, in great detail, and discussed how they fit or do not fit into the current meta of 7th Edition.

Opinion:  This was just an outstanding show from top to bottom!  Their discussion about the early meta they saw at one of the first big event in 7thwas just fascinating.  The segment of the show I enjoyed the most was the army-by-army breakdowns of who they think will come out on top in 7th Edition.  Outstanding show, easily my favorite for the week!  And here’s to episode 100!

The Independent Characters – Episode 105

Highlights: This week Carl, Adan and Justin are joined by Mike and they opened up the show with a little ‘get-to-know-you’ with Mike and his events planning duties.  They then moved on to some announcements before getting to the ‘Work Bench’ where they discussed what they have been up to lately in the hobby and gaming.  Next, it was on to the main topic of the show, which was running s successful 40K campaign!  They kicked off the topic with ‘Why would you want to play in a campaign?’  They move on to discuss some of the benefits of running a campaign and what they have learned about running them over the years.  This included some of the best ways to run a map based campaign, tree campaigns, team-based campaigns, and so much more!  Next, the guys dove into the places where they get their ideas for campaigns from.  This included sources like the Black Library novels, older White Dwarf magazines, the stories found in the books, real life historic events, and so much more.  Mike then talked about the campaign that he runs at Endgame; how it came about, what the rules are, and how it went with some twist, turns, and backstabs!  To close out the show, Carl talked to the legendary Dave Taylor and their discussed his involvement in the NOVA Open 2014 and the seminars he will be running there.

Opinion: One of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had was playing in a really good campaign!  This show revisited that idea and gave out some amazing ideas on the best way to run one.  There have to be a hundred bad was to do this, and the guys do a great job trying to point out the pitfalls.  They also provide a wealth of idea on how to do it right.  Outstanding show, definitely do not miss this one!

Forge the Narrative – Episode 59

Highlights:  This week the guys are live and on location from the American Team Championships!  They kicked off the show by discussing their lack luster performance on the first day of the event.  They moved on to talk about the decision to run the event under 7th Edition rules, their FAQ, and the restrictions placed on army construction and how they felt that this went.  They moved on to talk able what armies they were seeing a lot at this event, and what has changed from the lists they saw in 6th and now in 7th.  Next, the guys were back after the conclusion of the event and they were joined by Shane one of the TOs of the ATC.  They looked back on the event and their experiences there, which included not doing very well there, the allowances of unpainted models, if the format should go back to 5th Edition one codex/CAD armies, and much more.  They moved on to discuss the outstanding venue, some idea to improve upon this great event, and much more.

Opinion:  One of the first big events to be held under the 7th Edition rules, it was really great to get the guys perspective on how it went.  While they did not do so hot as a team, they all had some great points from the event and what competitive 7th edition looks like.  It was also great to hear from Shane and learn what it took to pull of this great event!

Imperial Vox Cast – Episode 116 ***Explicit***

Highlights:  This week Bill and Dawson dive deeper into the Psychic Phase of 7th Edition!  They kicked off the show with what they have been up to lately in gaming and the hobby.  Bill has being playing on Vassal and Dawson looked at the new Sanctus Reach box set.  Bill talked a lot about the game he played and his thoughts on the effects of the Psychic Phase.  Next it was on to the main topic of the show, reviewing that very controversial Psychic Phase that 7th Edition brought to the game.  So they started off by discussing how this new phase works, including generating power dice, how to cast your powers, and how ‘Deny the Witch’ now works.  They discussed how hard it is to get a power off now in 7th Edition and how much more difficult it is to try to cancel out a power.  They then discussed the game of which powers to cast first to pull ‘Deny’ dice out of your opponent’s hand.  They moved on to talk about how powers are selected, how independent characters choice their powers and then join units, and more.  They then moved on to discuss how they plan to approach the Psychic phase in a competitive mindset; will they be bringing more psykers or less?  And how they will use this new phase to their advantage and some tricks the found in the rules.  They closed out the segment by discussing some of their favorite and standout powers available.

Opinion:  The boys were back to their great line of shows after some time off for real life.  One of the most massive changes to 4ok in 7thwas the addition of the Psychic Phase and the guys break it down on this show.  They cover all of the major points of the mechanics but more importantly, took the opportunity to point out the early tricks they have learned to use in this phase.  A great show, keep up the good work guys!

Hitting on 3s – Episode 47 ***Explicit***

Highlights:  This week the guys have corrected their audio issues and kicked off the show with what they have been doing lately in the hobby and gaming.  Next, the guys moved on to talk about the idea of ‘Codex Creep’ in relation to the lately Ork Codex.  This is the idea that the latest codex to come out is far superior to the ones that have come before, whereas the Ork Codex release has met with a less than stellar response from the fan base.  This moved on to an interesting discussion about the competitive scene and how GW really has made some major changes to the game that do not fit into the competitive play of the game.  Next, Bryce and Bart are back for another edition of ‘Old Man Wargaming’, and this week they focused on Historical Wargaming and the game ‘Chain of Command’.   In the next segment the guys discussed some things they have noticed come up on the web, starting with rules questions like changes to ‘charging through difficult terrain’, how do drop pods really work, and what can Tyranids do in 7thedition to compete?  They closed out the show with the guys discussing their greatest moments in 40K gaming.  They then discussed how to keep a campaign going and how to keep players interested in playing, even if they are not doing so well in the campaign.

Opinion:  This show had a sandwich of 40K material, with some non-40K in the middle for flavor.  Usually this is not a format that I care for, however this week was different.  The boys had two really good topics on this week’s show in Codex Creep and Rules Questions they want answers to.  And even the non-40K material was pretty interesting.  Nice job guys, huge improvement over last show!
