Dark Age: Unboxing St. Mary

4 Minute Read
Aug 5 2015

001 Dark Age Forsaken Saint Mary

I’m back from Gencon with a suitcase full of awesome loot along with some Dark Age pre-releases.

As you can see this is more of an un-blistering. Mr. Black of Cool Mini or Not sent a lot of great stuff home with the BoLS crew for reviews, and I bought a lot more to go along with. Expect to see a lot of Dark Age over the next few weeks. I decided to start this run of unboxings with my favorite Saint: Mary. In a world where life is cheap and people are expendable, Mary is one of the few that actually cares about others.

Mary isn’t available to buy yet. She was a Gencon pre-release. But we’ll let you know when you can grab her.

003 Dark Age Forsaken Saint MaryHere are all the pieces that come in that huge blister.

004 Dark Age Forsaken Saint MaryHere’s a close-up of the saint herself.

006 Dark Age Forsaken Saint MaryHere are all the pieces on the bits sprue. I’m not sure where the flail was attached to the sprue, but there’s a peg on it that tells me it was meant to be a separate piece to be glued to Mary’s hand.

007 Dark Age Forsaken Saint MaryHere is the creature itself: Mary’s Unicorn. It’s weird face is a big part of what drew me to the miniature. They could have just gone with a mechanical horse, but we get this strange thing instead. Of course the creature underneath all the armor isn’t a horse at all it’s an equis. Samaria is too harsh for horses to be practical, so they use these sturdier genetically engineered creatures instead.

Last of all here are the creatures wings. They have literally no effect in game. The Unicorn can’t fly or even use these sharp looking things as a weapon.

And here is what Dark Age cards look like. If you’re curious about the new rules for Saint Mary, you can check the Dark Age Facebook page where they’ve posted images of all the Forsaken cards. As of me writing this, the Forsaken cards at the Dark Age website are out of date.

There is of course, also an unmounted version of Mary. You choose which Mary you want to use at the start of the game. This version doesn’t pop off once you reduce the mounted one to 0 hp if that’s what you were wondering. The biggest difference between the two is that the mounted version is faster and has an extra wound, but there are some key rules variations as well. Follow that link up there if you want to check out the finer distinctions.

010 Dark Age Forsaken Saint Mary OLDThis is the old St. Mary that’s being replaced. This sculpt has a lot of detail, but looks like it’s from a bygone era. I also prefer the more natural pose and proportions of the new one.

So let’s take a closer look at the new Saint Mary shall we?

011 Dark Age Forsaken Saint Mary

She’s isn’t quite as spectaular as her mounted version obviously, but still a cool and well sculpted model.

And here’s a shot from the other angle.

If you want to see all the rules for St. Mary’s forces you can go check the Dark Age Facebook Album where images of all the new Forsaken cards have been uploaded. Eventually these cards will also be available for download free from the Dark Age website, but as of this writing, only the ones on the Facebook Page are current.

~What do you guys think of these new Dark Age models?
