Wizkids is moving into unpainted fantasy miniatures late this year.  Paizo spills the beans with images and a lot more details.

Last week at GAMA, WizKids announced a new line of unpainted fantasy miniatures.

WizKids Unveils New Unpainted Miniatures Line for Late 2016

Here is a portion of the press release from WizKids:

Hillside, NJ — March 16, 2016 –
Leading board game and collectible miniatures creator WizKids today announced a brand new line of unpainted miniatures, featuring more than 150 unique fantasy sculpts, set to be released in Q4 2016.

The collection will include iconic characters, creatures, and even scene-building elements, all available in three types of specialty packs that will each contain a variety of sculpts:

  • Hero Packs will contain both a low-level and high-level sculpt of the same featured character.
  • Designed with army-building in mind, Monster Packs will contain 1-3 miniatures with different poses of a single monster.
  • Item Packs will contain scenery and items for detailing adventures.

The highly detailed miniatures feature an enhanced sculpting process, which highlights minute elements, and includes deep cut surface detail and scaled features for easier hand painting. They also come in dynamic and exciting poses, are pre-primed with Acrylicos Vallejo paint, and are ready to go directly out of the box. Customize the look and feel of your characters and campaign like never before.

The new line is set to launch in late 2016 and will be available at friendly local game stores world-wide.

That certainly got a lot of people talking, but many details were left intentionally blank.  What licences?  Are there any samples of the minis?  Paizo just stepped in with a lot information to fill in the blanks:

via Paizo:

“Our partners at WizKids, who have already produced nearly a dozen sets of prepainted plastic Pathfinder Battles releases, announced on Tuesday that they are launching a brand-new line of unpainted plastic miniatures based on their two popular fantasy miniatures licenses—Pathfinder and Dungeons & Dragons, along with some original unbranded dungeon scenery!

Each pack will be priced from $2.99-$3.99, depending on the size and number of figures included.

I had a chance to review early versions of these figures in hand at the show, and I think you will all be blown away by the enhanced sculpting process WizKids will be using, which highlights minute elements and includes deep cut surface details and scaled features for easier hand painting.

Take a look at the quick photos I took of Valeros on my iPhone to get a sense of how cool these will look. Much more detailed photos will appear here in the weeks to come.

The launch of WizKids new unpainted figure line will not impact either of Paizo’s two existing miniatures lines, Pathfinder Battles from WizKids and Pathfinder Miniatures from Reaper. As the new figures will use completely new sculpts and poses, there should be very little overlap with existing figures, though it’s safe to assume that some familiar faces are certain to appear in the new line.”

~What do you think of the two sample’s quality and the pricepoint of the new range?
