Doctor Strange is going to be one hell of an amazing trip…

Ben Davis, director of photography on the project, said this last August

“Most of the work within it is about other dimensions. And I described it, I think, when I was talking to Marvel as ‘Marvel’s Fantasia’ in a way, because it’s so sort of out there and different to everything else that they’ve done… There’s a lot of previsualisation, and there’s a lot of work which is very hard – you look at it and you see the imagery that they’ve created for it and you think, ‘well how the hell do we shoot that!?’ because it’s all sort of [M.C.] Escher stuff.”

Yep…. and based on the new trailer he hit that one on the head. Take a look!

Principal photography wrapped up a little under 2 weeks ago… it seems the CG bees over at Marvel Studios have been very busy.

There’s been a some grousing about the casting of Swinton since the choice was announced. For the non-comic readers: The Ancient One is depicted as an ancient Asian man with a beard on the page. Not so much here…

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige spoke about the gender and ethnic background swap in December:

“We’re never afraid to change. In the comic books, Jarvis is an elderly butler. In the movies, he’s an A.I. system which becomes Paul Bettany’s Vision. We are always looking for ways to change. I think if you look at some of the early incarnations of the Ancient One in the comics, they are what we would consider today to be quite, sort of, stereotypical. They don’t hold up to what would work today. Also, within the storyline of the comics, and our movie, ‘the Ancient One’ is a title that many people have had. We hit very early on on, What if the Ancient One was a woman? What if the title had been passed and the current Ancient One is a woman? Oh, that’s an interesting idea. [Clicks fingers.] Tilda Swinton! Whoah! And it just hit.

She has this amazing [ability to] harness of this androgynous sense. So, we use the term ‘her’ and ‘she’ in the film but, other than that, it’s very androgynous. Because it doesn’t matter.”

Tilda certainly brings the strange… which fits nicely in what is certainly to be a visual feast of weird.

I bet there will be a second trailer in front of Civil War next month – they’re the only 2 they have this year, and nothing has dropped from Guardians 2 just yet.
