The General’s Handbook is the gift that keeps on giving. Look what you can do now WFB gamers.

Universes & Rulesets

Now before we get into this I want to make an important point.  There are game settings and rulesets. These are two very different things.

The setting is the universe we enter to play with our beloved toys.  It could Star Wars, Star Trek, Dungeons & Dragons, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Immoren, or even Warhammer’s Old World.

These are usually beloved and cherished universes that have long term fans.  You have read the fiction, watch the TV shows or movies, and are actively mentally engaged in the universe. You want to play games in it because it inspires your interest and creative juices.

Then there are rulesets – a particular set of rules that allows like-minded gamers to play a game in a particular universe.  These can and do change over time.  Just take a look at how far the current edition of Warhammer 40,000 has come from it’s original incarnation in 1987’s Rogue Trader.  Now think about D&D’s Original Edition and today’s.  You could take players from the first and most recent editions of many games that they wouldn’t recognize much about each other’s rulesets.

What the heck is a Tiefling?

But, they would still share the love of their favorite universe, and probably talk about it for hours with each other.

That is why I’m so happy with the General’s Handbook for Age of Sigmar.  Because it has brought back one of my favorite activities – playing matched games set in the Warhammer Old World.

Pull out your copy and flip to page 146: Compendium Pitch Battle Profiles.

Do you see what I see?

That is a full listing of points for all the units from the Old World’s Age of Sigmar Battlescrolls.  This means FOR THE FIRST TIME since Age of Sigmar was rolled out last year, you can get together with your friends and play a matched points game set in the Old World!  And yes it’s the Old World.  Many of the great heroes who are deader than a door nail are in there.  Folks like Settra, Karl Franz and Grimgor who didn’t make it out alive all now have points.

Sure the Old World is lost and all it’s heroes are dead. But then again, so is everyone in Star Wars and the Horus Heresy – but that never slowed you down did it?

So the next time you pine for the Old World, or remember that great Black Library novel set in the Old World – don’t feel sad.
