The Tabletop Spotlight is on Fall of Magic – a truly unique RPG experience!

When Drake from Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy had this oblong box in his goody bag I was a little confused at first. Luckily, really great games can come in some very odd packaging – Fall of Magic is no exception:

Fall of Magic is unlike any RPG I’ve ever played before and I’ve been playing RPG’s for more than 20 years at this point. The game is played using the story scroll and your player tokens. Your party is escorting the Magus on a very far journey to discover why magic is leaving the realm. That may sound like a fairly typical intro to an RPG but what makes this so unique is that each player takes turns telling part of the same story. And that’s where the fun begins…

The Scroll has locations in Red and key words in black. Players take turns by describing the scene using the location they have arrived at. In their descriptions they MUST use the key words in someway. Every journey will be a different experience because each player’s story will be their own, but part of a larger whole. Each player starts with a Name, a Title and a point of origin. Events along the way can force you to add new descriptors to your character (or other players) and then other events can cause you to lose them. But the only “set” part of this adventure is the path along the scroll – each play through will be truly unique and a different experience because it’s only real limit is your imagination. There are random events and you do use a d6 but this doesn’t have the same style of “rolling” combat as an RPG like D&D or Pathfinder. This isn’t a stat game – it’s truly a ROLE playing game.

Overall, the components are magnificent! The scroll is made of a really nice cloth and has some excellent printing on it. The tokens are made of metal and the cards and accessories are all really well done. If you take care of this set you’ll be playing this game for years. It’s a fantastic way to really practice your story telling skills and create a unique Co-operative story telling experience. This isn’t going to be a hit with every type of gamer out there – but if you’re really into the world building and creation then this could the perfect game for you. Fall of Magic has been out for a while so go check out your FLGS to see if they have it!
