Come adventure in Midgard, the custom 5E/Pathfinder setting from Kobold Press.

Today on Tabletop Spotlight, we sit down with the Midgard Campaign setting book from Kobold Press. Step into a world of myths, legends, and a whole lot of territory that’s familiar but not too familiar.

Holy cow, this book is a beast. At 460 pages, it is substantial. But you get a lot, you get maps, you get a whole other world that’s full of stats and NPCs and some fairly inspiring lore. Here’s the breakdown: Midgard is a setting that’s inspired by the mythology of Europe and surrounding areas but through like a dark fantasy lens. What’s really neat about this particular iteration of that idea, though, is that they include North Africa and the Mediterranean and the Middle East. And not in just that problematic (to say the least) “the bad guys come from here” ways that other settings have done. It is by no means perfect, but there’s a lot to work with here.

One of the big characteristics of the setting book is that there’s a lot of analogues with the mythological figures as well. Baba Yaga, St. George, and other figures all have a place in the Midgard campaign world. It’s got this faerie tale or storybook quality to it, but it’s given a more real (I hesitate to use the word grittier) bent through this dark fantasy filter. And whether you play Pathfinder or 5th Edition, this book will work in your campaign. So check it out!

It is an age of war. Civilization slowly gives way to encroaching wilderness, and once-mighty empires now lie beneath the waves. Only magic and the warmth of hope keeps lights aglow when dread things prowl, and priestly wardings are bent by demonic rage.

The omens are dire. The roads to the shadow realm are open again, and the fey have returned to claim their ancient tribute. In the north the giants prepare for Ragnarok, while the goblins in the west grow restless. In the Crossroads, the shadow of the vampire princes falls across the land. The World Serpent is stirring—and not even all-knowing Baba Yaga can say what will happen next.

Note:The Midgard Worldbook is compatible with 5th Edition, and also compatible with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. Separate appendixes provide the needed GM-specific material for the game, and the Pantheon chapter addresses casters in each system separately.

Now more than ever, Midgard needs heroes to stand against the dark, driving it back with spell, steel, and cunning!

The 460-page Midgard Worldbook includes:
