40K Deep Thought: What Does a Post-Spam World Look Like?

As we anxiously wring our hands awaiting the Warhammer FAQ, some folks are already quietly preparing for life in a post spam world.

In case you’ve been living under a rock since Adepticon, the FAQ isn’t here. But the rumors have been running rampant about what lessons from both LVO and Adepticon are being incorporated into the rules update.

While the details have been rolling in and out like the tides – some common threads have emerged.

The big one is that this is shaping up to be a thorough big FAQ, so expect a LOT of changes.  GW has plenty of data to see what is overpowered and underpowered out there in the meta.

The second common thread is a drastic change to match play to tame match play spam nuttiness. Over and over we have heard rumors that the Tau Commander led the way that that unit limitations are coming.

Just some examples are:

Several “power units” will get nerfed to 0-1 per detachment.

Non-troops units will get a max unit cap to prevent spam abuse. Rumored numbers vary, but the most common described is 3.

What Does this World Look Like?

Right off the bat, the scourges of these units end immediately:

  • Dark Reapers
  • Flyrants
  • Custodes Vertus Shield Captains
  • Plagueburst Crawlers
  • Ravagers
  • Transcendent Ctan

That’s off the top of my head.  I’m sure you can think of more. What we end up with is more unit variety of lists and less monolithic lists that just cut & paste the current “hot unit” to fill out max points.  Now, most of the time these min-max lists don’t actually perform well, but to me, anything that gives us list variety and forces players to use unit synergy is a plus.

~What factions do you think are the biggest winners and losers if this rumor turns out to be true?
