As previously announced, the Elemental Cycle is on its way to Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game! With the elements out of balance and Rokugan on the brink of war, ancient creatures lend their aid to the Great Clans in battle—while a minor clan looks to take destiny into its own hands. The Elemental Cycle is scheduled to begin on June 28th with the Breath of the Kami Dynasty Pack and continue with one Dynasty Pack releasing per week for the following five weeks:

  • June 28th: Breath of the Kami
  • July 5th: Tainted Lands
  • July 12th: The Fires Within
  • July 19th: The Ebb and Flow
  • July 26th: All and Nothing
  • August 2nd: Elements Unbound

It’s another 6 packs in 6 weeks release cycle from Fantasy Flight Games. For a game like L5R, it makes a lot of sense, too. It’s a competitive game and a lot of the cards play off of each other. Also, for the sake of keeping their events Organized Play schedule on track and competitive L5R really needs this rapid fire release schedule.

This is one of the strengths and weaknesses of the Living Card Game model. Unlike an Collectible Card Game where you have randomized cards in each pack, all these packs contain a set of cards. While it might seem like a higher price point initially, when you compare it with the cost of purchasing a top-tier CCG deck, it’s much cheaper. At the same time, you don’t get the same rush as “popping packs” you do with the CCG model. Personally, I’ll take the consistency vs the randomization all day long.
