Games Workshop tackles the biggest question of all for the new edition of Age of Sigmar: How much is this going to cost?

Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Soul Wars is going to hit pre-orders this weekend. As we saw from the previews, there is going to be a TON of stuff in the box. But a lot of folks (myself included) were wondering what price-point GW was shooting for. Turns out that the pricing scheme should be very familiar.

Soul Wars will cost the same as it’s Warhammer 40,000 counterpart, Dark Imperium – for two armies, the full Core Book, and much more besides, it’s a steal. Meanwhile, Malign Sorcery will set you back no more than a Start Collecting! set – bringing a new kind of battle magic to your game is going to be simple. Finally, the General’s Handbook will be the same price it’s always been.

So what does that mean? Check it out:

AoS: Soul Wars – $160 / £95

Malign Sorcery – $85 / £50 (Edit: The Pricing List from retailers has this listed at $80/£45 this is probably what GW meant by “no more than a Start Collecting! set”)

General’s Handbook $35 / £20

Soul Wars is certainly competitively priced considering all the models you’re going to get in the box. We’re talking two playable armies that can easily be added on to with a Start Collecting Box.

Not to mention all the OTHER stuff, like dice, templates, quick start guides and of course the Hardback Core Book:

And, if the pricing holds the same pattern, when the Core Book comes out that means it’s probably going to run you $60 / £35 if you purchased it separately. If you wanted to go in with a buddy you could easily break this box up in to the Core Book for $60 and each army for $50. That seems pretty fair to me.

The Malign Portents pricing seems odd, only because we haven’t seen this type of “expansion” pack before for a Warhammer Game. But it’s looking like a whole lot of plastic in that box and plus a book that will have more magic, items and extra rules than you can shake a stick at. I’m very curious to see what Tournaments are going to do with it and how the player base will incorporate it in their games.

The General’s Handbook is going to be another must buy – if for no other reason than Matched Play Points for all the armies. If you want to use the new Stormcast models or Nighthaunts, you’re going to have to pick one up. Fortunately, it’s still going to be the same price as the previous version so that’s not too rough on the wallet.

All-in, if you want to play in the next edition day one, you’re going to have plan to spend $280 / £165. Don’t want the models in the Core Box and just want the rules you can probably wait and pick that up later. Or just buy the General’s Handbook and Malign Sorcery. I’m sure the core rules will be available on GW’s website at some point.

What do you think of the pricing for Soul Wars?  Are you ready to dive in day one?
