Undermountain is the largest dungeon in all of Faerun, and of course, it happens to sit right underneath Waterdeep. Waterdeep just happens to be the next setting for Dungeons and Dragons’ big adventure–you do the math.
That’s right folks, following the announcement of Waterdeep: Dragon Heist comes the next big adventure, and we do mean big, because Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage is designed to take players from levels 6-20.
Centered around the legendary Undermountain Dungeon, and leaving #NoStoneUnturned, Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage is a mega dungeon that will take players who have completed the Dragon Heist–or just who have heard tales of the legendary dungeon–deep beneath the Yawning Portal and into the largest dungeon complex in all of Faerun.
Designed by the legendary and insane wizard, Halaster Blackcloak, Undermountain is a sprawling dungeon that’s shaped by the mad mage at its heart. As much an extension of Halaster as it is his prison–if it even is that, who can say when Blackcloak is involved–Undermountain is full of danger, treasure, and expressions of Halaster’s ego. With entire rooms full of animated statues of the mad mage that come to life and laugh at hapless adventurers, the dungeon of Undermountain is a reflection of its creator.
This one sounds pretty exciting folks. Undermountain is huge, and it’s been a while since WotC has done a massive dungeon crawl–not since Dead in Thay, and even that was only a massive dungeon. This one consists of multiple floors, each one a setting unto itself. You can even see on the cover–mind flayers, gith, drow–an undead beholder–the villains and monsters of Undermountain are as varied as the ecosystem of each floor. You could spend a whole campaign delving into this dungeon (and it’s designed to go from 6-20) or even adventure beyond it, only to return later braving ever deeper while events in the world above the Yawning Portal unfold.
Speaking of the Yawning Portal, you can expect that to feature handily here. Durnan found the secrets to immortality deep beneath Undermountain. Who knows what other secrets await any adventurer brave enough to venture inside to brave Halaster’s traps, madness, and magic? Dungeon of the Mad Mage is due out in November, so you’ll have time to work your way through Waterdeep: Dragon Heist a time or two before braving Undermountain.
Of course the real money is made betting the Over-Undermountain on adventurers who try their luck at the dungeon.
