Goatboy here again and wow what a wonderful time for the Chaos players out there. Get in here.

If you are living under a rock or in some kind of dirty hive mind – GW released a full minicodex for the Renegade Knights that you can download.  It isn’t nearly as neat as the Imperial version – but it does do exactly what we want for some “evil knights” – get them updated Points wise and rules wise for the 40k universe.  Beyond this lovely thing we also got an updated Knight FAQ to help bring things into line with new codex as wel.

Imperial Knight FAQ

Let’s talk about the FAQ.  The biggest wins on that front is the FW knight got the ability to be Mechanicus or Imperial if they wanted too.  This lets those FW knights into all the armies they wanted and makes sure all the Stratagems, rules, etc works on them.  There seems to be some interesting bits in there as the “faster” knights can get very speedy – 3d6 + 2 pick the highest two and then a full tilt charge seems good.  We’ll see if they end up showing up in competitive builds.

The other FAQ big fix was resolving the whole – taking some Armigers in a detachment might net me 0 command points.  This got updated with you needing just one big Knight in any 3 choice LoW Super heavy Detachment to get 3 command points.  This is great as a buddy of mine was very upset that his Knight plus 2 units of Armigers was not going to work as well anymore.  Of course you can’t leave the 3 big Knight detachments out of it – as they now get 6 command points.  Holy poops this has helped out all of my current Knight based armies.

Those are the biggest things from the FAQ so lets move on to what I am especially Jazzed about.

Renegade Knights

The Renegade mini codex is a pretty neat bit of simple rules.  While we did not get all the stratagems (please add in Full Tilt!) we did get 2 powerful ones.  The Rotate Ion Shields is a much needed ability as well as the new Trail of Destruction which allows a knight to reroll all failed Hit Rolls for the Knight.  This is pretty dang snazzy as it allows your double Battle Cannon knight to be a complete shooting monster for a phase.  Especially when you have a plethora of extra Command Points for your evil Chaos based armies.

The Renegade Knights get 3 Knight Chassis – the normal Knight variant with options to get all the weapons the minus the Las-cannon like one for the Preceptor.  You can still double weapon both arms so expect a lot of double Battle Cannon or Double Gatling guns to show up on the tabletop.  The Renegade Knight also becomes just like a Gallant if you set it up with Sword/Fist option. The Dominius class now has a basic Dataslate with options to make either one.  You can’t mix and match the weapons like the normal Renegade knight (OMG would I love to have the Flamer Gun X 2) but at least you can make this guy a bad guy knight.  You finally get Renegade Armigers with the ability to have different weapon load outs.  It is kinda annoying you can’t do the Autocannon plus Close Combat weapon option but hey I get to convert evil Armigers so I am happy.

There isn’t a ton of meat in this mini dex as while we get 2 Stratagems (please give me Full Tilt for bad guys!!!), one Warlord Trait, and one relic –  it at least gives Chaos something new to mess around with.  All the points match up to the Imperial counterparts so building lists should be easy.  I already have some favorite options myself and I expect a few to show up in peoples lists as the cultists bombs give more then enough “bubble wrap” to allow the Knights to shoot all day.  I wish we go the option to Mark them as it would make for some interesting interaction with some Thousand Sons variants as well as some of the Chaos Spells themselves.  Still I can’t complain too much as my 3 Evil Knights finally have some rules to play around with.

Chaos Renegade Knight List

Let’s look at some dumb ideas for lists.  Will start with a full assault army because – Khorne Demands it.

Super Heavy Auxiliary Detachment – Renegade Knights
LoW: Renegade Knight, Reaper Sword, Fist, Heavy Stubber – 354
LoW: Renegade Knight, Reaper Sword, Fist, Heavy Stubber – 354
LoW: Renegade Knight, Reaper Sword, Fist, Heavy Stubber – 354

World Eaters Battalion
HQ: Kharne – 160
HQ: Exalted Champion, Chainsword X 2, MoK – 70pts
Troops: Khorne Berserkers X 8, Icon of Wraith, Chainsword/Chainaxe X 8 – 145pts
Troops: Khorne Berserkers X 8, Icon of Wraith, Chainsword/Chainaxe X 8 – 145pts
Troops: Khorne Berserkers X 8, Icon of Wraith, Chainsword/Chainaxe X 8 – 145pts
Dedicated Transport: Rhino, Combi-Bolter, Combi-Melta, MoK – 89pts
Dedicated Transport: Rhino, Combi-Bolter, Combi-Melta, MoK – 89pts
Dedicated Transport: Rhino, Combi-Bolter, Combi-Melta, MoK – 89pts

2000 pts …if my points work out right.  This is a no thought, go at em, and bring the true words of Khorne to the forefront.

While the above list is goofy I expect most Renegade Knight lists to be shooting based with some Close Combat options.  I think in that case a Renegade Valiant will be pretty mean as it pushes forward with its flamer.  The default Long Ranged shooty knight with 2 Battle Cannons will also be a heavily sought after option.  Expect one very shooty knight, 2 mini Renegade Armigers and probably a metric ton of Cultists to show up to some events, maybe win a bunch of games, and be a pain in the butt.
