The upcoming expansion boards for Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire add some new lethal options to the already lethal combat in the City of Mirrors. Come take a look at what they can do.

Shadespire is a fast-paced, brutal game of combat in the Age of Sigmar. Bands of heroes fight against each other, battling and dying only to be reborn, denied the release of death, denied escape from the Shattered City by its dark master, to whom Death itself is but a loyal servant. The Shattered City expansion pack is coming next week, alongside the Leaders card pack, which we’ve already shown off.

The Shattered City pack adds some new configurations of terrain for your games, including a number of red-limned Lethal Hexes that present you with myriad ways to both destroy your enemies but also potentially harming your own troops, depending on what strategies your hapless opponent uses against you. But you’re too clever to fall for such base tricks.

Ahh don’t stand in the fire, a lesson that MMOs have been failing to teach Raids since 2004.

But what, you might be wondering, ARE Lethal Hexes? Take it away Warhammer Community.

Lethal hexes are a new kind of Warhammer Underworlds hex. Representing the many hazards of the Mirrored City – from gouts of balefire to just sharp bits of shadeglass – these hexes deal 1 wound to any fighter than passes through them – whether you’re driven back, moved by a ploy, or choose to move through them voluntarily.

This opens up a world of possibilities for pretty much every faction. A) that’s extra damage that you can set up. Whether you’re playing a multi-model swarm army that’s capable of pushes, like the Skaven or the Skellingtons (Petitioners, I know), or an already hard-hitting faction, every player can always use extra damage. Especially guaranteed damage.

In fact, depending on what you’re playing, you’ll probably want to charge through these Lethal Hexes on purpose. Ironskull’s Boyz spring to mind, with their damage increased any time they’ve suffered damage, which means you can roll in hot with some inspired Boyz and start showing your enemy why the Ironskulls are the best faction in the game. Or if you want to kill off some enemies to bring your undead troops back and inspired–you’ve got everything you need right there.

And that’s not even counting all the myriad ploys and upgrades that are triggered if you have enemies or allies injured–it’s a good, safe way to control the damage you take/dole out, which adds to the already tight gameplay that Shadespire has. You’ll have to be real cunning to make the most of this–but we’re very excited to see more expansions like this in the near future.

What do you think of these new boards? Excellent configurations or complex clusters?
