Adeptus Titanicus: Awakening The Machine Spirit

Warhammer 40K

When the Machine Spirit of a Titan is pushed, it can push right back. Sometimes that can give you an extra edge in battle and sometimes the results can be…catastrophic. Awaken them at your own risk.

The god-machines of the Adeptus Titanicus aren’t exactly alive – but they aren’t soulless automatons either. No, the Titans certainly develop a personality and the Princeps who “pilot” them into battle have to learn how to coax them into functioning. Sometimes it takes a stern command, other times it takes a gentle nudge, and then there are times you just have to let the Machine Spirit take over and do what it wants!

Today, Games Workshop is teasing one of the many quirks of the Titans. Pushing your Titan harder on the battlefield can sometimes have some unexpected results. To best represent that, Adeptus Titanicus has a chart that you roll on when your Titan’s Machine Spirit has had enough of your poking. You might get lucky and the Machine Spirit might be in a cooperative mood – or it might rebel and push back against the Princeps orders.

At first glance these all kind of sound awesome. The Titan wants to charge forward and attack/smash/shoot – heck ya! Lets get in there and do some butt-kicking, right?! Depending on your play style that might be great, but Adeptus Titanicus is a game about planning, positioning, and movement as much as it is about massive firepower. When a Titan breaks ranks and goes for the kill it might get lucky and get in some extra attacks. Or it could be putting itself squarely in the enemy’s trap.

There are lots of ways to customize your Titans besides just the paint job. In the book there are rules for different formations, rules, maniples and houses that can impact how your personal Adeptus Titanicus Forces works on the battlefield. Creating a custom House or going with one from the book affords lots of opportunities to develop your own narrative and “personality” for your Titans.

And more stuff is coming. In the box we already saw the rules for all the extra weapon options and the developers have already planned on being able to swap those weapons out. So embrace the Machine Spirit and customize your Titan to get the most out of it on the battlefields of Adeptus Titanicus!

How will you treat your Titans on the Tabletop? Are you going to push them until they rebel (possibly in your favor) or are you going to work with them to get the desired results?
