Warhammer 40,000 Kill Team’s new Commander Expansion is out and available for pre-order this weekend and we’ve got our look at the new expansion!

Games Workshop is bringing the Commanders to the tabletop for Kill Team with this latest expansion. We all got a taste of what they could do with the Rogue Trader box – now it’s time for the rest of the factions to get access to brave new specialists:

The Commanders Expansion basically takes a lot of the HQs from the full scale game and brings them to the skirmish table. In it you’ll find new rules for these specialists for all of the current factions in Kill Team. We’ve seen preview of them all week from the Imperial, to the Xenos and finally the Chaos Commanders. You’ll get a book inside with the new rules for commanders, two decks (one is just blank for unit info – the other are tactic cards), and and some punch out tokens to help you track things.

One of the cool things this expansion adds are psychic powers. Pretty much each faction that has a Pskyer in the HQ slot now has one as a Commander. Every psyker has access to Psybolt which is a smite equivalent. They also have access to a “generic” pool of powers they can opt to swap out Psybolt with. Plus, many Pskyers ALSO have access to their respective disciple.

This expansion also unleashes a ton of new tactic cards specific for Commanders. You’ll be able to choose to activate the aura abilities at the cost of Command Points. I like this mechanic as it doesn’t penalize players for NOT taking a commander. If those abilities were just always on then you’d be at a major disadvantage for skipping them. However, because they have to be activated by using a limited resource like CP, suddenly it becomes an interesting choice. Do I spend the resources (in both points and Command Points) to utilize the Commanders, or do I use those same resources for other things.

The Commanders Expansion is a nice addition to Kill Team. It brings some characters to the game in a different way and while they aren’t mandatory for play, they do add some good options to the game.

Some warriors are destined to bear the mantle of command. Whether hardened veterans, inspirational orators or blood-hungry champions, these leaders are worth many times their number, possessing the might and sheer force of will to change the course of battle in an instant. These legendary commanders instil dread in their enemies just as they inspire fierce loyalty in their comrades, tipping the balance of entire war zones and turning impending routs into triumphant victories. No matter their chosen expertise, all are exemplars of their kind, the embodiment of their Faction’s martial strengths.

Kill Team: Commanders is an expansion for Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team, introducing elite war leaders and experts in the art of battle – Commanders. It contains all the rules required to add these powerful hero characters to your Kill Team battles and campaigns at a variety of balanced skill levels and provides missions designed to showcase these miniatures in open, narrative and matched play.
