Funded in just 27 minutes, Sandy Petersen is bringing the Cthulhu Mythos into the world of Dungeons and Dragons. And what’s more, this book is ready to go to print as soon as the campaign ends, come see what additional rewards you can snag.

That’s right friends, Sandy “Call of Cthulhu” Petersen is bringing his Cthulhu Mythos fantasy supplement over to 5th Edition. A smash hit for Pathfinder (the whole run of it is nearly sold out), Cthulhu Mythos brings Horror to High Fantasy. Chock full of new monsters, spells, insanity, and more importantly a guide for running elements of horror in your own campaign. You can find a sample of the rules available for free download below, but for now, let’s check out the Kickstarter, because there are some pretty amazing rewards on offer to those who back before campaign’s end.

If you’re still reading, I’m going to assume you know at least the barest bones of the Cthulhu Mythos–the elder gods of the Cthulhu Mythos are beings of cosmic power who consider humanity insignificant, and who care not for the cultists who worship them, the mortals that oppose them–and indeed, when the stars are right will wake from their deathly slumber to enslave or devour all before them. Well, leaning into the storied tradition of creating alien evil like this, and having adventurers go swinging at it with their broadsword and mighty thews…

…as well as the storied tradition of Robert Howard type characters stomping on H.P. Lovecraft type monsters, Cthulhu Mythos brings rules for hundreds of monsters, dozens of new player options–including four new playable races, the Mythos Ghouls, the Gnorri, the Zoog, and the only one that really matters, Dreamland Cats. Dreamland Cats are actual cats who can see into dreams and other worlds and so on.

All of this can be found in the Pathfinder version of the book–but the 5th Edition adds even more exclusive content, including:

But if you really want to know what this book is about, check out the sample rules linked below. The first thing you’ll find, assuming you can’t see the hidden page that bears runes from a forgotten tongue no longer spoken except by those who descend from eldritch horrors best left unspoken of, is a set of rules for running horror in your game. And that sets out the ethos of the book.

  • Don’t use jargon
  • Make the enemy malign
  • Use a mundane setting

You can find out how each of these apply to your fantasy RPG inside. I highly recommend this campaign. It’s fully funded and you’ll get a .pdf the moment the campaign ends, so you won’t be wondering when you’ll get your book–it’s already ready already.
