Star Wars Armada: Ideas for a Large Fleet

This weekend my local game store is running an 800 point tournament, here are some fleets I’m thinking about taking.

My local group, and the stores we play at, like to switch things up. This weekend they are running what is being called a “monster truck mania” event. The rules are pretty simple. 800 point fleets, with up to 200 points spent on squadrons. Only Large and Medium ships allowed. They’ve also made a few changes to some of the missions, a couple give more points, and of course longer and few rounds will be played. All in all its hoping to be a unique and fun event. I’ve been thinking over a few lists I might take if I decide to go, and here are my thoughts.

Imperial Might

Commander: Darth Vader

Whats more in the spirit of a monster truck mash then 6 Imperial Star Destroyers? I’ve taken a mix of long range ISDIIs and close range ISDI and Kauts. This should allow me to do well at any range. Gunnery teams means I’ll get the most shots off. By running the 7th Fleet title on all my ships I also make sure I can get the most out of it. I should be able to ignore 6 points of damage a turn, which is no small feat. Lastly Vader gives me re-rolls to make my stuff more accurate. This is not a finesse fleet. It’s about raw brute force and the sheer hope that the enemy won’t have the fire power to deal with me. Also, not a lot of people have 6 ISDs to take. I do.

Victory

Commander: Admiral Konstantine

This fleet is kind of a variation on the previous one. Instead of six ISDs it takes ten VSDIs. Again this is a pretty brute force fleet, relying on getting in close and pounding the enemy. To that end I’ve taken Konstantie to lead the fleet. With how many ships I have I should be able to constantly slow the enemy down. Couple that with simply filling the table with my ships and the hope is to just lock the enemy in place and ruin them. VSD Is are cheap enough that losing a few wont break me either. With this number of ships of course I was going to fit 7th Fleet on as many as I could. While I don’t have any squadrons the hope is that I just have enough hull to deal with it. My biggest worry is really getting in my own way. 10 VSDs might be too many. Eh, thats ridiculous.

Fleet of the Line

Commander: Admiral Ackbar

[ flagship ] MC80 Assault Cruiser (114 points)
–  Admiral Ackbar  ( 38  points)
–  Home One  ( 7  points)
–  Raymus Antilles  ( 7  points)
–  Engine Techs  ( 8  points)
–  Advanced Projectors  ( 6  points)
–  Electronic Countermeasures  ( 7  points)
–  X17 Turbolasers  ( 6  points)
–  Leading Shots  ( 4  points)
197 total ship cost

–  Defiance  ( 5  points)
–  Strategic Adviser  ( 4  points)
–  Engine Techs  ( 8  points)
–  Electronic Countermeasures  ( 7  points)
–  Advanced Projectors  ( 6  points)
–  X17 Turbolasers  ( 6  points)

154 total ship cost

–  Adar Tallon  ( 10  points)
–  Engine Techs  ( 8  points)
–  Advanced Projectors  ( 6  points)
–  Electronic Countermeasures  ( 7  points)
–  X17 Turbolasers  ( 6  points)
–  Leading Shots  ( 4  points)
=155 total ship cost

MC80 Star Cruiser (96 points)
96 total ship cost

1 Shara Bey ( 17 points)
1 Tycho Celchu ( 16 points)
1 Corran Horn ( 22 points)
1 Keyan Farlander ( 20 points)
1 Ten Numb ( 19 points)
1 Lietenant Blount ( 14 points)
12 Z-95 Headhunter Squadrons ( 84 points)
192 total squadron cost

Points: 794/800

Assault Objective: Advanced Gunnery
Defense Objective: Fighter Ambush
Navigation Objective: Solar Corona

OK, here is a “real” fleet. This one is more than just brute force. At 800 points I can really live out my love of ships of the line. 3 MC80 Assault Cruisers form a moving wall of fire, with Ackbar adding to their firepower. While they can’t throw out the sheer number of dice as 6 ISDs, they can still concentrate a lot of firepower in one spot. With actual upgrades and the like they should be pretty effective. I’ve also got a made swarm of squadrons to fly between me and the enemy. It’s a horde of z-95s with Blount and should be able to tie up enemy squadrons, or pound an ISD with red dice. Through in a few good aces and this wing should be able to do something. Lastly I’ve got a stripped down Star Cruiser to act as my suicide ship, she can flank, or just jump into the middle of the enemy formation to mess things up. If I had 3 MC75s I might take them instead of the 80s (to get gunnery teams) but alas I only have one. I think this list takes skill to play, but might have a bit of punch.

So What Do I Take?

I’m still on the fence about what to take. I think I’m leaning towards the first list, when else can I take 6 ISDs? But its up in the air. Let me know what you think I should run if I’m able to go.

Let us know what kind of list you would run at an 800 pt event, down in the comments!
