We return to the South with a new story from series creator Nic Pizzollatto. Mahershala Ali plays a detective lost in an old case, the case that ended his career, that is much more that what it seems on the surface.

The new season has Oscar winner Mahershala Ali in the lead as an Arkansas detective looking into what appear to be more crimes involving children. It’s also returning to the split narrative of the first season, so we’ll see Ali in several timelines as he looks back at a haunting case of two missing kids… and it looks like a conspiracy is behind it.

Along with Ali the cast includes Deborah Ayorinde, Stephen Dorff, Carmen Ejogo, and Ray Fisher. Pizzallatto and Deadwood creator David Milch wrote the script; and Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room), Daniel Sackheim (The Americans), and Pizzolatto were in the directors’ chair. Limiting the number of hands on the project really helped season one, as did allowing more time to create it. Hopefully both will benefit the new season. Cross your fingers.

I’m going to ignore that the mess that was the second season happened all together. The initial season is great television – complete with brilliant performances, a compelling mystery, and gorgeous cinematography. I am open to this third season to being more of that.
