Geekery: Horror Thriller ‘The Prodigy’ Excels in Creepiness and Hand Tools

Director  Nicholas McCarthy’s latest focuses on a young boy who is extremely intelligent, but there’s something wrong. Something that’s causing his family to be terrified of him.

Orion Pictures’ movies garnered Oscars in the 1980s, but it went silent in the last 1990s. It’s now rebuilding itself with horror titles like Anna and the Apocalypse and The Prodigy

In her much-anticipated foray into the horror-thriller genre, Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Taylor Schilling stars in THE PRODIGY as Sarah, a mother whose young son Miles’ disturbing behavior signals that an evil, possibly supernatural force has overtaken him. Fearing for her family’s safety, Sarah must choose between her maternal instinct to love and protect Miles and a desperate need to investigate what — or who — is causing his dark turn. She is forced to look for answers in the past, taking the audience on a wild ride; one where the line between perception and reality becomes frighteningly blurry.

This ticks off a lot of boxes on my list of things I like in my horror movies. Solid cast, the premise doesn’t appear to be overly complicated, and it’s certainly sinister. It’s got a bit of an Omen/We Need to Talk About Kevin thing going for it – possessed, evil children are one of the creepier horror sub genres when done right. Miles is played by Jackson Robert Scott, who played Georgie in the IT remake. He has potential. The latest clip shows a bit more of the dual role the young actor is playing, and what’s going on in his character’s head…

I’m not going to say this is high cinema, but if you’re a horror fan that’s not what you’re expecting from this. I think it’ll be a good, creepy thriller for genre fans to see on Valentine’s Day this year.
