Cosplay Artist Spotlight: Order 66 Creatures and Effects Pt 2

6 Minute Read
Feb 28 2019

Larger than life cosplays, details, gadgets, and gizmos galore! This week we feature the stunning work of a studio that builds projects more true-to-life than their subject materials.

What is your favorite genre to work in? (Fantasy, Sci-Fi, etc)
I must say I’m a fan of the whole spectrum of genres but if I had to choose it would have to be sci-fi. That genre is just limitless with possibilities.
What material is your favorite to work with?
Any type of clay, Chavant, Monster Clay or even plain old ceramic Buff clay. Its fast, forgiving and again the possibilities with it are nearly limitless.
What are your favorite fandoms? Favorite characters?
We originally started out specializing in Star Wars themed creations which led us to making things for Rancho Obi-Wan and being invited to Skywalker Ranch to deliver something we made for one of the top guys at Lucasfilm.
Who are your cosplay inspirations
I must say I really get inspired after walking around the various events and Comic Cons that we get to attend. The standard of work being created today by people in the bedrooms is better than some of the stuff you’d see at the studios back in the day. Just incredible stuff!
Whose work do you admire or aspire to?
The level of commitment by many cosplayers is really inspiring to me, just makes me want to go back to the workshop and push for something bigger and better every time.
What projects are you working on in the future?
There’s one in particular that we are very excited about but I’m afraid I cant talk about just yet as I haven’t finalized it with certain parties at Marvel.
However, there is another project to bring Superman’s nemesis to life in the shape of the character ‘Doomsday’.
We often tend to err towards physically larger characters to build as it’ll either be myself or my brother Tom being roped into wearing them on the day. And with both of us hovering around the 6’ 6” – 250lb mark the larger characters work really well with our shape. This really helps with the character’s final over all silhouette.
Our current project on the bench is for one of our promo shoots I mentioned earlier. Every few years we will produce a costume for our own promo shoot that helps showcase  what is possible. Kamil Krawczak, a local cinematographer with an amazing eye for the ‘hyper-real look’ takes care of all the camera work for these shoots and creates some incredible images.
The upcoming costume that we plan on shooting is called the Batman XE suit. XE standing for e’X’treme ‘E’nviroment, which actually reminds me of a dinky Warhamer 40K design. We always like to add some practical effects into our suits. So It’s basically a Batman suit on steroids complete with smoke, lights, a sound system, a semi active exoskeleton, an actual working nitrogen freeze ray with thermal insulation(for the freeze ray!) that was developed for the space shuttle program. Once its all finished we’ll take it on location to Iceland to get some shots of it in some sort of dramatic setting. The costume design is from one of the Arkham video games which seem to be becoming more popular with our clients than costumes from movies these days.
What kind of games do you enjoy playing? Videogames? Tabletop? Wargames?
Sadly I get very little time to play games as most of my playtime happens in the workshop. I did get into gaming a few years back after the popularity of video game characters started to become more popular. The gaming has provided an invaluable resource for reference material, just being able to do a full 360 degree visual rotation of a character is priceless. As much as I enjoy playing I’m still absolutely useless at gaming, but then I suppose like anything you need to commit the time to it.
What are your favorite movies/shows to watch or music to listen to while you craft?
I have an extremely eclectic mix of playlists that I listen to while working. If its really intense concentration focused work like sculpting then I have a massive collection of classical music that fires something in the remaining brain cells I possess. Then again I also have a total balls to the wall metal thrashing mad playlist with everything from Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Antrax, Steve Van etc. That helps when I need a kick in the pants to get stuff completed for a deadline.
What conventions/cosplay events do you attend?
I don’t tend to compete in the contests any more as I’m starting to feel my age standing around in rubber all day.
Over the years I have won numerous first place and best in show awards at Star Wars Celebration and other Comic Cons and also hold 2 Guinness World Records for cosplay.
Have you guested/spoken on panels/competed in contests?
I mainly attend Comic Cons as a guest speaker now and have been all over the world from London, the US, most of continental Europe and as far east as Dubai.
What conventions are you attending this next season?
I have nothing confirmed as yet for the coming year due to workshop commitments that need to come first. But I’m sure I might attend a few last minute events If time permits.
What message do you have for people wanting to break into cosplay?
Stick at it and put the time in. I’m a firm believer in the 10 thousand hour theory that if you apply that amount of time you can pretty much become an expert at anything if you have the right aptitude. There is so much amazing stuff out there to learn from on social media today.
What is the most important lesson you have learned in your time working in Cosplay?
Its probably that you never stop learning. There are so many incredibly talented people out there that you can never sit back and think you know it all. There is always some new material or technique. They might not always be better than the old ones but from that you might discover new and better ways of creating something.
Anything important we’ve left out that you want to share?
Yeah, Cosplayers ROCK!
