Vigilus unleashed 40K Specialist Detachments upon the game but lots of factions still don’t have any. Where’s the love GW?

With the arrival of Vigilus Defiant and Vigilus Ablaze we’ve seen a whopping 30 new Specialist Detachments added to the game. The Imperium and Chaos got quite a few. Orks, Genestealer Cult and Craftworld Aeldari also got a handful, too. But there are still lots of factions that are being left in Vigilus’ Wake.

Now, we realize that these books just launched and have only been in circulation for a couple of weeks (even though it can feel like longer). And we also realize the GW has teased a bunch of new war zones that are probably bringing these Specialist Detachments with them. So we know that these rules are coming – but for now, let’s take a look at all the armies that don’t have *access to Specialist Detachments.

*We’re counting in factions that can ally in Specialist Detachments. For example the Drukhari can technically gain access to the Windrider Host if they bring in some Craftworld friends. By access, we mean “they don’t have their own Specialist Detachment.”

  • Blood Angels
  • Deathwatch
  • Grey Knights
  • Adeptus Custodes
  • Drukhari
  • Harlequins
  • Death Guard
  • Thousand Sons
  • Imperial Knights
  • Necrons
  • Nurgle Daemons
  • Tzeentch Daemons
  • Slaanesh Daemons
  • Tyranids
  • T’au

That’s another 15 Armies that don’t have Specialist Detachments. Now, there are some factions on that list that probably don’t even need Specialist Detachments (looking at you Imperial Knights). But theoretically, if these were all split-up between the 5 new war zones, that would mean GW could put 3 armies in each war zone and give them each at least 1 Specialist Detachment. I don’t know if that’s what they have planned, but the math works out. They could easily group up these factions and drop them in the different war zones, too.

For example, the Drukhari and Harlequins could team up vs Slaanesh and GW could have a campaign/war zone based around that. Or the Blood Angels and Deathwatch could team-up for a strike against the Tyranids. Another logical group could be the Death Guard and Nurgle vs the T’au in the Galactic East.

Alternatively, GW also has no issues with tossing a bunch of seemingly random armies on the same planet and fighting it out. Vigilus is evidence of that!

It’s going to be interesting to see how GW rolls out these new war zone and what that means in terms of new rules for these different armies. Heck, we might even see some of the factions that GOT Specialist Detachments get a few more – Dark Angels and Space Wolves come to mind. I also wouldn’t be opposed to seeing more Ork options either…

What do you think? How do you think GW will implement the new war zones and more Specialist Detachments? What are types of Specialist Detachments you want to see in your army?
