Historicals: Pre-Order Corsairs For Blood Red Skies
Two new Corsair Squadrons are up for pre-order from Blood Red Skies. Come see the Black Sheep and Grim Reapers.
Two new squadrons are available for Blood Red Skies that will allow you to bring two different F4U Corsair Aces and their accompanying squadrons to your armies. There’s the Grim Reapers, led by Philip Leroy Kirkwod, and the Black Sheep, led by Gregory “Pappy” Boyington. Check them out below!
VF-10 “Grim Reapers” – $48
F-10 began its illustrious career flying the Grumman F4F Wildcat, deployed with USS Enterprise to the Southern Pacific, taking part in the 1942 Battle of Guadalcanal.
Returning to the U.S. they transitioned to the Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat and once again deployed to the South Pacific aboard Enterprise. During this second combat tour, VF-10 was heavily involved in operations from the Marshall Islands and on to Jaluit, Emirau, Western Caroline Islands, Hollandia, Truk Lagoon and the Battle of the Philippine Sea (known as the Marianas Turkey Shoot).
After this second tour, the squadron returned to the U.S., transitioning to the Vought F4U Corsair in January 1945. The Grim Reapers returned to the Pacific aboard USS Intrepid (CV-10) and took part in strikes against the Ryukyu Islands, Kyūshū, Okinawa and Wake Island.
This is where ACE (then Lieutenant, Junior Grade) Philip Leroy Kirkwood was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy.

VMA 214 “Black Sheep” – $48
In 1943, a group of twenty-seven young men under the leadership of Major Gregory “Pappy” Boyington (just returned from a year’s tour in China as a member of the 1st American Volunteer Group (The Flying Tigers)) were joined together to form the original “Black sheep” of Marine Attack Squadron 214 (VMA-214).
The Black Sheep fought for 84 days and piled up a record of 203 Japanese planes destroyed or damaged, produced nine fighter aces with 97 confirmed air-to-air kills, sank several troop transports and supply ships, destroyed many installations, in addition to numerous other victories. For their actions, the original Black Sheep were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism in action.
